    Scrofula, or King's Evil,
fe & constitutional disease, a corruption of tho
Wood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
fccrvades the whole body, and nmy burst out m
disease on any part of it. !No vqpvi n free- from
its attacks, nor is there one which it may not
destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously caused
by mercurial disease, low living disordered or
unhealthy food, impure air, tilth, and filthy
habits, the depressing ?ices, and, aboyo nil, by
tlie venereal infection. Whatever be Us origin,
it is hereditary in the constitution, descending
' from parents to children unto the third ana
fourth generation;" indeed, it seems to he the
rod of Uim who says, " I will visit the iniquities
of the fathers upon their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
fciiwd of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tuton-Ics ; in the glands, swellings ; and on tho
Mirfacc, eruptions or sores. This foul corrup
t'ton, which genders in the blood, depresses the
encrgic of life, so that scrofulous constitution
not onlv suffer from scrofulous complaints, but
thev have far less power to withstand the attacks
of other diseases: consequently, vast numbers
exish bv disorders which, although not scrofu
us in'thcir nature arc still rendered fatal by
this taint in the system. Most of the consump
tion which decimates the human family lias its
origin dircctlv in this scrofulous contamination ;
and many destructive diseases of the liver, kid
neys, brain, and, indeed, of all the organs, arise
frffirt or are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people arc scrofulous ;
their persons aro invaded by this lurking infec
tion, and their health is undermined by it. To
cleanse it from the svstcm we must renovate tho
Wood bv an alterative medicine, and invigorate
it bv healthy food and exorcise. Such a medi
cine wo supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most cffcclual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise fortius every-whero
prevailing and fatal malady. It is combined
from the most active rcmedials that have been
discovered for the expurgation of this foul disor
der from the blood, and the rescue of the sys
tem from its destructive consequences. Ilcnco
it 5 liould be employed for the cure of not only
scrofula, but also "those other affections which
arise from it, such as Ekuttive and Skik Dis
kasi:.", Sr. Axthony's Pike, Rose, or Ert-

Diseases, Dropsy, Dyspepsia, Debility,
and, iudecd, all Comtoaixts arisixo from
Vitiated on Impure Blood. The popular
belief in " impurity of the blood" is founded in
truth, for scrofula is a degeneration of tho blood.
The particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsa
parilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in
coiuaniinctcd constitutions.
Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
arc so composed that disease within the range of
their action can rarely withstand or evade them.
Their penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
and invigorate every portion of the human or
ganism, correcting its diseased action, and restor
ing its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of
these properties, the invalid who is bowed down
with pain or physical debility is astonished to
find his health or energy restored by a remedy
at once so simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day com
plaints of every body, but also many formidable
and dangerous diseases. The agent below named
is pleased to furnish gratis my American Alma
nac, containing certificates of their cures, and
directions for their use in the following com
plaints : Costivcncss, Heartburn, Headache oris
inyfrom a disordered Stomach, JVausca, Indiges
tion, Pain in and Morbid Inaction of the Boiccls,
Flatulency, Loss of JpjKtitc, Jaundice, and other
kindred complaints, arising from a low state of
the body or obstruction of its functions.
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,.
TOR THE rapid cuee of
Coughs, Colds, Influenza, Hoarseness,
Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the dis
ease. So wide is the field of its usefulness, and so
numerous are the cases of its cures, that almost
even- section of country abounds in persons,
publicly known, who have been restored from
alarming and even desperate diseases of the
luns by its use. Vhcn once tried, its superi
ority over' every other medicine of its kind is too
apparent to escape observation, and where its
virtues arc known, the public no longer hesitate
what mitidote to employ for the distressing and
dangcaous affections of the pulmonary organs
that are incident to our climate. While many
inferior remedies thrust upon the community
have failed and been discarded, this has gained
friends by every trial, conferred benefits on the
afiiicted they can never forget, and produced
cures too numerous and too remarkable to be
forgotten.

"Dr. Hunter's Medical Manuel." The
author of this work, unlike the majority of
those who advertise to cure the diseases of
which it treats, is a graduate of one of the
best Colleges in the United Slates. It afFords
me pleasure to recommend him to the unfor

JOSEPH S. LONGSHORE, M. D.
From A. Woodward, M. D. of Penn. Uni

It gives me pleasure to add my testimony
to the professional ability of the author of the
"Medicul Manuel." Numerous cases of Dis
eases of the Genital Orffans. some of them of
long standing, have come under my notice
in which his skill has been manliest in restor
ing to perfect health, in some instances where
the patient has been beyond medical aid. J 11

superior in the profession. I have been ac

well as a kindness to the unfortunate victim
of early indiscretion, to recommend him as
one 111 whose professional-skill and integrity
they may safely confide themselves.

Has permanently located him
self in Stroudsburg, and moved
his office next door to Dr. S.
Walton, and nearly opposite S. Itees's Hat&.
Cap store, where he is fully prepared to treat
the natural teeth, and also to insert incorrupt
ible artificial teeth on pivot and plate, in the
latest and most improved manner. Moatper
sons know the danger and folly of trusting
their work to the ignorant as well as the
traveling dentist. It matters not how much
experience a person may have, he is liable to
have some failures out ot a number of cases,
and if the dentist lives at a distance, it is fre
quently put off unt-il it is too Jateto save the
tooth or teeth as it may be, otherwise the in
convenience and trouble ol going so far.
Hence the necessity of obtaining theservices
of e dentist near home. All work warranted.
