What "Sam" Means,' Every body has read of the peregina tions in this country, recently, of an ec centric individual whom the newspapers A Mysterious Transaction. We have been favored with the partic ulars of a very strange affair in the town ship of Salem, this county, so far as those in that section, affected by tho transac tion, aro permitted to know the whys and wherefores of the mystery. Several weeks ago, Mr. Curtis, one ot the most upright and honorable men of the township, received a brief letter, with out date or signature, printed with a pen, purporting to have been mailed at Phil adelphia, enclosing one hundred and two dollars, in good bank bills; with a request that he would distribute the money to a bout fifty different individuals mostly neighbors, a list of the names being ap pended, and the amount going to each, , snt onnosite the name respectively. A man of superior teaching powers teaches well by any rational method ; but ho will always teach best by that method which is suited to bis peculiar capabilities. 8. Men generally teach badly when they attempt to teach too much, or when they do not duly prepare their lessons. 9. Presence of mind, and that confi dence which is basjsd on self-knewledgc, are essential elements in' a good teacher's character. 10. Success in teaching is more depen dent upon the capabilities of the master for teaching, than upon his technical ac quirements. Teaching power is not al ways associated with superior talent or acquirement. Teachers and Scholars. The School Journal for the past month contains several decisions or great im portance; and among others, this one, in regard to the power of the teachers over the scholars, out of school : The authority of teachers over pupils out of the school house, is a question o- ver which the Department has, under tho law, only advisory, and not absolute pow er; and deference to former decisions on the subject, has delayed instructions thus far on this point. But numerous and in creasing complaints from single schools and entire districts, of bad conduct and acts of insubordination, at the school house and under the eye of the teacher and directors, have been received. Theso cases are demoralizing in their character and subversive of the discipline of the schools, yet neglected by parents, and not properly cognizable by the Courts, re quire the statement, here, that in the o pinion of the present Superintendent, the jurisdiction and authority of tbe teacher over pupils is neither limited by the school house walls nor to the time the school is actually in session; but that, as a general rule, in all matters legitimately connect ed with the schools and tbe manner? and morals of tbe scholars, the teacher's jur isdiction commences at the momeut when pupils leave the parental roof and con trol to co to school, and continues uutil 13 their return from school. denominate "Sam."
