    Hints For Uoveinbcr.
Tho close of tho year is near at hind
seed has beeu sown the harvest gath
ered and now comes the labor of pre
paring for winter1 cold and frost, In
our last we suggested several ways in
which coarse foder could be rendered of
more service as food; and also strongly
urged the necessity of providing good
aud warm shelters for all your animals,
for warmth to a certain extent is an equiv
alent for food.
The prudent farmer will avail himself
of every fair day to provide a bountiful
supply of muck, dry turf, leaves, and re
fuse of all descriptions, to mingle with
the droppings of his yard. He will not
suffer his cattle or sheep to run over his
meadows and clover lots; aud for the sake
of saving a little hay, suffer ten fold dam
age by the close grazing of young and
tender shoots. He will see that the
change from grass to hay be made as
gradually as possible, that water in a
hundancc is accessible to all his stock,
and also salt and ashes and for his fat
ting hogs charcoal; cracks and crevice's
will be6toppcd good fastnings append
ed to gates, stables and barn doors ; and
he wiTl particularly guard against the
possibility of volunteer pruning of his or
chard by hungry kine.
Young animals of all descriptions must
be tended with extra care, and kept in a
growing condition ; for checks in early
growth are rarely recovered from in after
lift.
Improve your time in rainy days by
looking in occasionally at the school
liouso door, and don't stop there see if
the room is properly warmed and venti
lated ascertain for yourself whether the
cats are comfortable, and duly propor
tioned to the respective sizes of the pupils.
Grudge not the uecessary books, for
inonev is never invested in better stock
han when it conduces to the improve-1
nient of the young; and be not vexed if 1
your cuudren should wear out their books
as well as shoes. A pleasant word at
night to the school boy and girl, who
have been pouring over their books during
the day at school questions like these :
What can you tell me about to night that
you have learned at school to-day 1 what
:nore do you know than 3'ou did tbi
morning
I we know from personal ex
perience powerfully contribute to interest
children in their siudies, and aid a teach
er in his arduous and too oft poorly re
quited labor.
As the long winter evenings are com
ing on, be sure that you make your own
fireside more pleasant than elsewhere.
Many too many have we seen turn a
willing ear to the allurements of pleasure
and dissipation, when better iudgement
condemned their folly, simply hecausc
a -
the-buoynant and elastic spirit of their;
childhood and youth were too much curb-1
ed and checked by the stern and thought
less parent. But our limits forbid ex
portation. The Gcncscc Farmer.

The Vermont State Temperance Socie
ty, some years ago, passed a set of reso

iu a very few words, the whole truth in
reirard to the responsibility of the liquor
traffic
'Whereas it is a principal of Divine
legislation if an ox gore a man or a wo
man, that they die then the ox shall be
purely stoned. And whereas, if the ox
were wont to push with his horns in time
past, and it hath been testiGed to his
owner, and he hath not kept him in, but
that he hath killed a man or a woman
the os shall be stoned, and his owner al
so shall be put to death therefore,
Resolved, That the License System is
an ox that is wont to push.
2. That the owner of this ox is not the
man who hires him, by purchasing a li
cense, but the freemen who rent the ox,
nnd who receive pay for the privilege of j
working him.
3. That it hath been testified to the
freemen of this State the owner thereof
that the ox is wont to push, and they
have not restrained him, but that he hath
killed both men and women in great
numbers.
4. That the freemen of Vermont are
justly accountable for every death this
ox produceth or hath produced.
5. That no freeman is quit of his ac
countability in this matter who doth not
all he can to have the ox restrained."
