The Hot Season.
IJY OLIVER WENDELL HOWIES.
The folks, that on the first of May
Wore winter-coals and hose,
Began to sa', the first of Juno,
"Good Lord! how hot it grows.
At last two Fahrenheit blew up,
And killed two children small,
ind one barometer shot dead
A tutor with its ball !
Now all day long the locusts sang
Among the leafless trees;
Three new hotels warped inside out
The pumps could only wheeze;
And ripe old wine, that twenty years
Had cobwebbed o'er in vain,
Came spouting through the rotten corks,
Like Joly's best Champagne!
The Worcester locomotives did
Their trip in half an honr;
The Lowell cars ran forJy miles
Before they checked the power;
Boll brimstone soon became a drug;,
And locofocos fell;
All asked for ice, but everywhere
Saltpetre was to sell.
Plump men of mornings ordered tights,
- But, ere the scorching noons,
Their candle-moulds had grown as loose
As Cossack pantaloons!
The dogs ran mad, men could not irv
If water they would choose;
A horse fell dead, he only left
Four red-hot, rusty shoe!
Bat soon the people conld nol tear
The slightest hint of fire ;
Allusions to caloric, drew
A flood of savage ire ;
The leaves on heat were all lorn oat

Singular Appearance.
About five o'clock on Saturday morn
ing last the Vrestern sky was covered
with a cloud of greenish hue that cover
ed thc whole earth with the same tint,
till it appeared much as it would do to
one looking through a piece of green
glas2. The cloud, in color, was much
such a one as is naid sometimes to pre
cede tornadoes ; but it remained motion
less, overspreading thc sky until it broke
up and rolled off in masses before the
sun. The plainest effect of the colored
light was iu the air itsslf, which appear
ed, when looking at an object, to bo
stained all through, and gave one the
sensation of looking through very trans
parent colored water. The appearance
la-ted a short time, half an hour probably,
gradually diminishing in effect as tho
sun rose, until it disappeared. We hare
noticed the same thing before, but never
so plainly. Indianapolis Journal.
