himself against that, when, by
mere accidental officer returned irons
Mexico was passing, and being made :tc
iuninlcd with the difficulty, applied a
uonfplctc remedy by the following simple
process:
He took a cord about the size of a com
mon bed cord, put it in the mouth of the
hor.se like a bit, and tied it tightly on the
top of the animal's head, passing his left
t-.r under the string, not painfully light,
but tight, enough to kci-p the ear down
and the cord in its place. This done, he
patted the horse gently on the side of the
head, and commanded him to follow, and
instantly the horse obeyed, perfectly sub
dued, and as gentle and obedient as a
well-trained dog; suffering his feet to be
lifted with entire impunt1, and acting in
nil respects like an old stager. The sim
ple string, thus tied, had made him at
once as docile and obedient as any one
could tlcsirc. The gentleman who thus
femihetl this exceedingly simple means
of subdacing a very dangerous propensi
ty, intimated that it is practised in Mexi

Seed of tlie Alfalfa grass, a species of
Ltjcrrne, has been distributed to various
plsccs in the Union, by the Patent Office.
It was brought from Chil: in South A
merica. It is spoken of by the Commis
sioner of Patents in the following manner.
It. is a vigorous grower, requires little
labor, and furnishes two crops a year of
wuxssl ncitricious food for stock of all kinds.
As ia well known, the mining districts of
Chili are for the most part very sterile,
and rain is of seldom occurrence. Nat
ural grasses are, therefore, of scanty
growth and the miners are compelled to
xejy for the maintains nee of their ani
mals npon the alfalfa estate?, which lie
witliin the valleys of that mountainous
ircgion.
The supply would, howerer, be wholly
inadcrjaate, vcre not the plant so remark
ably prolific, and'posscsscd of such extra
ordinary nntricious properties. With the
addition of a little barly, it is found to
licf wulcs iu the best working condition
and consequently the owner of one of
lhese tdftdfa luicizmlas is able to draw
from his estate a much 3arer revenue
liiasi if cultivated in grain. In its green
state, cattle feed upon it with the utmost
avid it v, acquire flesh so fast that it is a
practice in Chili to drive herbs from the
grass pastures of the South for hundreds of
miles, in order to obtain the benefits of
ats use. The land is prepared for the
seed of this plant in the same majoner as
for clover, it being in truth of the same
family as the latter.
Dr. T&chudi, in his traveles in Peru,
Plates that this plant is cultivated iu great
abundance throughout the whole of Peru,
as fodder for cattle. - It does not bear
fireat humidity, nor severe heat or cold,
jet its elevation boundary is 11,000 feet
above the level of the sea. On the coast
it flourishes very lusuriently during the
months of February and March,) corres
ponding with our August aud September,)
it almost entirely dries up. In the moun
tainous disixictjis also most abundant du
ring the humid season, but as soon as the
first fro! sets in, it decars, takes a rusty
Drown color, aud remains in a bad state
until the begining of the rainy season.-
On an average, the alfalfa may be cut
four times in a 3'ear, but in the elevated '
dtstricts only three times and iu humid I
soils on the coast, particularly in the.
neighborhood of rivers, five tunes. Once
, , ,
iu every four or five years the afalfa fields
are broken up by the plough, and then
sown with barly or maize. The sixth
year alfalfa is again sown.
J he mosj favorable soil for the -growth
this plant would appear to be a deep
sandy loam, such as the alluvial deposite
along rivers aud stream?, or the fertile
and bottom lands of the South and West.
It is not adapted for heavy lands nor
those which are wet. 3eing a deeproot
od plant, irequires a soil that is loose,
iu order that its roots may penetrate to a
considerable depth. If the soil is not suf
ficiently light by nature, it should be
made so by the use of the spade or the
tub-soil plough.

The editor said, Dec. 22nd-JJr Jloolland's
celebrated German Bitters for the cure o I Li-
er complaint, jaundice, dyspepsia, chronic
or nervous debility, is deservedly one of the
most popular medicines of ihe day. These
Jitters have been used by thousands, and ;i
Iriend at our elbow says he has himself re
ceived an effectual and permanent cure of
liiver complaint from the use uf this remedy.
We are convinced that, in the use of these
Hitters, the patient constantly gains strength
and ugor a fact worthy of great considera
tion. They are pleasant in taste and smell
md can be used by persons with the most
delicate stomachs wiih safety, under any cir
cumstances. W e are speaking from experi

"If this medidine was more generally used
we are satisfied there would be less sick
ness, as from the stomach, livei, and nervous
system the great majority of real and imagi
nary diseases emanate. Have lhem in a
healthy condition, and you can bid defiance
to epidemics generally. Phis extraordinary
medicine we would advise our Iriends who
are at all indisposed, to gie a ttial it will
recommend itself. It should, iu fact, be lit
every lamily. iNo other medicine can pio
duce such evidences of merit.1'
Evidence upon evidence has been receiv
ed (like the foregoing) from all sections of
the Union, the last three years, and the strong
est testimony in its lavor, is, that there rs
more ot it used in the practice of the regulur
Physicians of Philadelphia, than all other
nostrums conbined, a fact that can eaisily be
established, and fully proving that a scien
tific preperation will meet with their quiet
approval when presented even in this form.
