A New System of Medicine
The Carlisle Democrat reports tlie fol-
lovritig case, tried at the last Cumberland
County Quarter cessions :
Commonwealth vs. Dr. "Waggoner.
This was a very amusing ca?e the doc
tor being indicted for obtainincr money
under false pretbncesj by the following
"cute" stratagem in the healing art,
played off upon his patient. He told his
patient, who was consumptive, evidently
pretty far gone, that he could, by invo-
King me assistance ot the Holy Spirit and
three private interviews, cure him, or he
(the doctor) would have no slinrn willi
God, which the patient was credulous c
nough to believe, and irranted the doctor
the first interview, whereupon the doctor
nsKeu ior a DiacK thread, measured the
sick man's arm and side, then
some salt and bread, and a small piece of
me oia gentleman s shirt tail, which were
all produced, when the doctor, in a man
ner very sanctimonious, or to use the ex
pression made use of by the old Dutch
-witness, in a way which "St. Paulus"
would have d one had hf Iinon nn inrf Ji
sticjjjd the panacea in the waist-band of
-.l.-'K i i i .......
Luuugan s Dreecnes, and told him now to
prefsnt every cent of monev he had in
thewrorld, which modest request was also
vjumpuuu wuu, tue doctor deliberately se
Jeing first a two dollar note, then a five,
temng his patient that a five dollar note
irgs belter than a two, and then selected
tj.fo gold dollars and some silver, amoun
ting in all to twelve dollars and twentv-
fieve cents, asking Ins very dutiful patient
to make choice between these two propo
sitions: "to continue in bad health, or wish
. i
the selected money to pass out of his
sight." Health was of course wished for.
and the doctor pocketed the dust to get it
out of the man's sight : and to do this
more effectually he thought it advisable
to leave for parts unknown. This arrant
old villain escaped upon legal grounds.
The court telling the jury in their charge
that the otience as laid and proved did
not come within the Act of Assembly,
and that in this land of liberty a man had
a nerfect right to make choice of any one
the various systems of medicine now
practided, and that if he was gullible e-
liough to adopt the salt, bread and shirt
tail system, he ought to pay for it. The
jury brought in a verdict of not guilty.
A Hog for the World's l?air. The Mil
Waukie Daily Sentinel says : "A monster
hog, weighing eleven hundred and nine
pounds, was lately shipwed on board the
steamer Arctic, on his way to the World's
JbairatAew lork. He was purchased
by Messrs. R. Bugg k R. Stewart, of Ni
agara Co. ST. Y. for $200, from Mr.
Hollister B. Thayer, of Troy, Walworth
County, Wis. His actual measurment
was as follows: Girth behind the shoulder
being 6 feet 7 inches; extreme length, 9
feet 11 inches hight to top of the back,
8 feet 10 inches. He was perfectly white,
and only twenty months old. The hind
wheels of the wagon were taken off, when
the animal walked off of his own accord on
board the boat, and laid down on deck
contented. The owners are confident of
m aking him weigh eighteen Imndrcdpoimds
when fatted, live weight. This is one of
the specimens Wisconsin sends to the
World's Fair ; it will be hard to beat."

The Grand Lodge of -Odd Fellows of

self in Stroudsburg, and moved
his office next door to Dr. S.
Walton, and nearly opposite S. M click's Jew
elry store, where he is fully prepared to treat
the natural teeth, and also to insert incorrupt
ible artificial teeth on pivot and plate, in the
latest and most improved manner. Most per
sons know the danger and folly of trusting
their work to the ignorant as well as the
traveling dentist. It matters not how much
experience a person may have, he is liable to
have some failures out of a number of cases,
and if the dentist lives at a distance, it is fre
quently put off until it is too late to save the
tooth or teeth as it may be, otherwise the in
convenience and trouble ot going so far.
Hence the necessity of obtaining the services
ofa dentist near home. All work warranted.

Cure of Consumption,
Livzr Complaint, Colds, Coughs. Asthma
Bronchitis, and all Throat and Ltmg Com
plaints. I have published a brief work on Consum
ption, which contains an invaluable recipe
for the cure of these prevalent diseases, even'
in their worst stages, when friends and phy
sicians have given up all hope. The Lung
balsam prescribed in this work Cures withou
the expensive aid of physicians or injurious
use of patent medicines. In adopting this Sys
tem of Cure the patient knows what he is us
ing knows that he is not shortenning his
pays by the use of anodynes or mercurials,
which may seem to Relievb but never Cure,
He knows When using this Life-saving Bal
sam, that he is taking mild, pleasant, effica
cious remedies, such ris Nature prescribit.
for the ills her children suffer. The ingredi
ents compOsfngthis Lung Balsam are obtains'
able (cheaply too.) wherever consumption
exists, proving thixlEoeiyillhas Us anlidot e
Consumptive patients may Rely on Hits rcccip
(all Lung Complaints are removed by its "
use) 1'would not attach my name to it, had
I doubt of its efficacy. The directions for
preparing and tibiig the Balsam .ire perfectly
plain. 1 prefer selling the Recipe to making
the Balsam, as it enables people to Make,
their oivn Medicine at a Trijling Cost. 1 wil
impart the secret of making the Balsam, and
the Family right to use it, for Si, but in uo'
case will I sell it for speculating purposes.
Proof of its Goodness.
