A New System of Medicine
The Carlisle Democrat reports tlie fol-
lovritig case, tried at the last Cumberland
County Quarter cessions :
Commonwealth vs. Dr. "Waggoner.
This was a very amusing ca?e the doc
tor being indicted for obtainincr money
under false pretbncesj by the following
"cute" stratagem in the healing art,
played off upon his patient. He told his
patient, who was consumptive, evidently
pretty far gone, that he could, by invo-

three private interviews, cure him, or he

sitions: "to continue in bad health, or wish

sight." Health was of course wished for.
and the doctor pocketed the dust to get it
out of the man's sight : and to do this
more effectually he thought it advisable
to leave for parts unknown. This arrant
old villain escaped upon legal grounds.
The court telling the jury in their charge
that the otience as laid and proved did
not come within the Act of Assembly,
and that in this land of liberty a man had
a nerfect right to make choice of any one
the various systems of medicine now
practided, and that if he was gullible e-
liough to adopt the salt, bread and shirt
tail system, he ought to pay for it. The
jury brought in a verdict of not guilty.
A Hog for the World's l?air. The Mil
Waukie Daily Sentinel says : "A monster
hog, weighing eleven hundred and nine
pounds, was lately shipwed on board the
steamer Arctic, on his way to the World's
JbairatAew lork. He was purchased
by Messrs. R. Bugg k R. Stewart, of Ni
agara Co. ST. Y. for $200, from Mr.
Hollister B. Thayer, of Troy, Walworth
County, Wis. His actual measurment
was as follows: Girth behind the shoulder
being 6 feet 7 inches; extreme length, 9
feet 11 inches hight to top of the back,
8 feet 10 inches. He was perfectly white,
and only twenty months old. The hind
wheels of the wagon were taken off, when
the animal walked off of his own accord on
board the boat, and laid down on deck
contented. The owners are confident of
m aking him weigh eighteen Imndrcdpoimds
when fatted, live weight. This is one of
the specimens Wisconsin sends to the
World's Fair ; it will be hard to beat."
Important Temperance Morci
The Grand Lodge of -Odd Fellows of
this State, recently assembled at Phila
delphia, passed the following telling reso
lution, with but eight dissenting votes in
the whole body :

Bu a recent Act of Cotltrrcss it is enacted,
rhat each of the surviving, or the widow or
minorchildren of deceased commissioned and
noncommissioned officers, musicians, or pri
vates, whether of regulars, volunteers, rang
ers or militia, who performed military ser
vices in any regiment, company or detach
ment in the service of the United States, in
he war with Great Britian, declared by the
United States on the eighteenth day of June
1812, or in any of the Indian wars since 1 !)0
and each of the 6om'missioned officers who
was encaged in the military service of the
Jnitcd States in' the late war with Mexico,
and shall be entitled to lands as follows :
Those who engaged to serve twelve
months or during the war, and actual!
served nine months, shall receive one hun
dred and sixty acres: and those who engaged
to serve six months and actually served lour
months, shall receive eighty acres; and
those who engaged to serve for any or an
indefinite period, and actually served one
month, shall receive forty acred. Provided,
that wherever any officer . or soldier was
lonorably discharged in consequence ol dis
ability in the service, he shall receive the a
mount to which he would have been entitled
if he had served the fell period for which he
put'engaged to serve.
Under the above act. and the acts of Con
gress oencrallv. the subscriber offers his ser-
vices as agent to procure Land Warrants for
those entitled to receive them, as above spe
cified. He may be found at his office in
