The financial centre to-day it rattier quiet and
gold declined from 11r2E' to 1.13.14. when tele
'grams were received announcing the active
preparations of France forma early campaign,
which sent the price up to 121%. Later in the
day there wail greater excitement, and at the
close the activity rem equal to any' previ
ransly witnessed. A private amble telegram
from London reported a panic on the Lou
don Block Exchange, with 5-3.0 bonds down
to lefilithe lowest point yet made to the present'
war. The excitement of this amts was a sig
nal for a general rush to buy gold and under
enormous purchases the market was run
up to L 3(. the highest point yet reachedon
the present movement. The room during this
advance wan a scene of most frantic excite
ment and the mania to buy gold was greater
than any previous tie,, during the war troub
les in Europe. Numerous rumors were atioat
un,t he street to-day to the effect that the treas
ury would to-morrow sell more than 1.1100.0 G)
In gold and buy an Increased amount of bonds
on Thursday next. The rumors could not be
traced to any reliable authority. Shipments
of specie to-morrow are variously estimated at
three to four millions. Money market active

As might be expected the war news tot
started up speculation in Chicago again, stud
already some of the spots are reported as hav
ing foal up. sad unless there fe a reaction
of which there Is not much prospect
now, others will be obliged to follow suit.
The Chicago Tribune of Monday bays: There
was a large 'attendance on 'Change : to-day.
and an excited eat of marletS in grain. owing,
to the war news, and its Inevitable consequen
ces in the money markets of the world. There
was a large quraity of train delivered this
morning, Ou the maturing options of seller last
half, and without the excitements . of war the
markets should have bee 4 weakened by these
offerings. especially as the rezelpte were quite
liberal: Out the war news created a perfect
furore among buyers. Numerous orders were
sent to from the country to buy, without tim
ing a limit of price. and the local speculators
were equally anxidus to cover short., or buy
for future. Some two or three of these gen
tlemen - laid down - under the pressure, but
this far, no important failure, has been an
nounced. ;

this market is very light and those who have
it are very stiff. Good to crime red may be'

Oats, also, excited and very arm though as
yet the demand cannot be termed active; we
were reported sales at Liff.ss. with but very

The stock is by no means large. and dealers
do not expect the new crop nu the market be
fore the middle, of August, and It is argued
that In the meantime all the old crop will be
wanted. Corn is scarce and with a specula
tive demand prices are higher, and fair to

might be expected, the market is a little ex
cited, and somewhat unsettled. Some of th •
farmers and wool growers appear to be lin
pressed with the belief that wool will. wlthi

sequenily. they are holding their ntoek for
better Priers; whilst others, who ore willing
to^ sell; want an advance of two or three
cents per pound. We learn, however, that
buyers are gradually withdrawing from the
market; preferring to lie Idle fora time rath
er thanpay the prices that are now generally
demanded.' There are those. however, who
have glees, thcmatter colisiderable attention,
:who contend that should: hostilitlee actually
take place, and that while it would tend to
enhance breadstuffs and articles. of eznort

matter is that there will be nothing to cause
