Tim particulars of the fearful and fatal accident to Mr. Harry Leslie, in Washing ton, on Tuesday. are contained in the journals of that city. O'HIKPERINGS OF THE FICKLE GODDESS Tilt fashionable hooped skirtsare eed small. nearly straight. and hare a small bustle shaped out at the back. Ttig little breeze respecting the atom donment of short dresses (or the • street has died sway, and the shrill dresses re• Lotio lace veils, slightly pointed in front, are worn with bonnets this summer instead of the short veils which have been so popular. Otrtrrts and traveling - dresses are in universal demand, and many inquiries are made u to what is required for visite to a greater or less distance, and of longer or shorter duration. A TRAVELINUI dress of alpaca or Tak cloth, a short black silk suit, not access's rily'new. and one trained silk dress are sufficient to start with upon a European tour, with the addition of a jacket or two, for negiige, and an "Adirondack." jr is not considered at all necessary to provide an extensive wardrobe upon go. ing to Europe, as the chance of hobnob. bing with royalty, or even with common dukes or duchesees, has boon found to be generally remote, and It Is, moreover, •"carrying coals to Newcastle." THERE is quite a little ruge just now among very . distinguished ladles for black toilettes for church wear. The dress of rich gros grains is almost covered by a wattau of black lace, And, with its man. tills veil or lace lappets, gives quite a conventional as well as grand effect to the toilette. Younger ladles soften the effect of titer blaok silk church inits by adding . a wide sash of blue gros-gfain and a blue silk scarf at the throat. Fort jewelry the Japanese enamels, with figures of dragons or birds with crests of inlaid stones, are in favor. Some are cased so as to show the design upon the interior also; their prevailing colors aro blue, green and yellow. The heart-shaped lockets with cases of plain blue or black enamel, ornamented with Inlaid designs of gold, or various stones, as diamonds, rm. hies or pearls, meet' , with a steady sale among our leading houses. THE Empress Eugenio does not origi. nate the fashions, neither do any ladles of real rank and distinction; they adopt them, and thus net the seal of their ac knowledged authority upon them, but no lady would be the first to wear &striking novelty, or a style so new or somata as to be likely to attract public attention. Thi■ is left for the leaders of the demimonde, several of whom are in the pay of Pari sian dressmakers and modistes. Tue latest robe do contra le of pink gros grain or turquoise blue for It blond. The silk bodice Is ornamented with brettelles of Valenciennes lace, and a very wide silk sash fella over the light folds of the tunic. \ SUMMER sultsiaro nearly all made of 'white or buff linen, pique, cambric, or, muslin, and the art of preserving the new appearance after, washing le a matter of the greatest Importance. Common wash. erwomen spoil everything with soda, and notking is more frequent than to see the delicate lints of lawns and percales turned into dark blotches arid muddy streaks by the ignorance and vandalism of a laundress. It is worth while for ladles to pay attention to this, and insist upon having their summer dresses washed according to the directions which they should be prepared to give their Linn dresses themselves. In the first place, the water should be tepid, the soap should not be allowed to touch the fabric; it should be washed and rinsed quick, tinned upon the wrong olds, and hung In the shade to dry, and when sterched (in thin boiled, but not boiling, star c h) should be fOlded in sheets or towels; and ironed upon the wrong side as soon as possible. Buff linen should be washed in water in which hay has been boiled, or a quart bag of bran. This last will be fonnd-to an swer for starch as well, and is excellent for print dresses of all kinds; but a hand ful of salt le very useful also to set the colors of light cambrics and dotted lawns; and a little beef's gall will not only sot but heighten yellow and purple tints, and htlir a good effect upon green.
