PITTSBURGH DAILY- GAZETTE : SATURDAY MORNING, MAY . 21, 1870. PETROLEUM. • lafermal Meeting of Ment-ontrineure and the OU Trade. , An informal meeting of the 'Pittsburgh Pe troleum Association was held at the rooms of the Association yesterday morning for the purpose of having n conference with John K. Garrett, Esq.. President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Comtiany relative to the ship merle of oil to ttaltimore for export when the rifteienTh and Connelsville Railroad la com pleted. There was quite n (urge attendance. of oil dealers and lively interest manifertml in the matter under m o ms o lderation. Mr. Gar ' .7.lt,,!44`,l'VrZ e bedw gg.lf,tl7l,7Ve ably represented by Mr. G. R. Blanchard, the 6 ,...,1 Freight Agent of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The meeting being an Infor o was conversational in character, and general Interchange of opinion was had of the adviudages to .both parties the city of Baltimore and the oil trade of this city as ts - alti Mr. Blanchard wooed the meeting that the Connellsvilleroad would be completed and in operation through to runt berland within eight months. Baltimore. he sald. would be thirty miles nearer the oil re and t han either New York or 'Philadelphia. it was the intention and policy of the road to Induce the oil trade to that point: It wan also to the advantage of the trade to adopt:Baltimore as the point of export an ac count of the many advantages it offered over Its more northern rivals. . . Mr. Blanchard said that the BaMinors and Ohio Railroad Company. In making the large expenditures they have made, have done so with a clewof reaching Pittsburgh by rail direct, and making it a grand central shipping point. In the road now building by wa of Connelsville, they have an Interest of 000,000. The city of Baltimore bad Pavo They did not come to Pittsburgh to solicit any pecuniary aid, but would like to feel assured that its business men would co-operate with them provided it-was their decided advantage to do so. He regarded the oil trade as one of the greeted Importance. and they would give the greatest facilities In their power to make it advantageous to ship_ try their route. He thought the B. P. Railroad would be fin ished In three quarters of a year. and would like to have our oil men keep the reservoirs full for shipment. Mr. Hutchinson thought the shipment Bast amounted to about 5,000 barrels daily, and was only about two-thieds what it ought to be. The avenge rates were about $1.45 a bar rel. Mr. Blanchard could not say definitely what the rates on B. &P. line would be. They now shipped oil by B. & 0. road, from Parkersburg to Baltimore. a distance of twenty miles sictterthan from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia for 11) cents a barrel less, and that , road had a much heavier grade. ._ Mr. Forsythe—How do you propose to con nect with the Allegheny t alley road. Mr. Blanchord said there wall some trouble there. as the first two car loads they shipped to Baltimore by way of Cleveland, the Alio gherry Valley charged Oa-barrel: but as goo as they found it went to Baltimore, they tab ed the late to it lo: . Morgan said. you can tight them by the ..._ of thte State for pro rata rates. Mr. Blanchard said that was a question Mr. Garrett would like settled. whether the Pitts burghers proposed to help them tight, or let the Baltimore and Ohlo Company do all the il lier. l' lg h ga e t we pose pose to help you If you kelp on. The meeting continued for a considerable length of time, and the greatest harmony pre vailed as to the views of those present. Mr. Blanchard in concluslo
