Inventor. and AU About Them—A
Large e,,ndlieece Entertained
Probably every man sometime to
life he. thought himself to to an Inven
tor. There seems to be a principle In
men, especially Americana, which at one
time or another attracts them more or
leas into this field; and whether entices'.
or not, inventions and Inventors, with
their toils and successes, their defeats,
discouragement, and glory, form s study
ever fresh. and always instructive and
faecinating.
It is not strange, then, that last even
ing, notwithstanding the cheerless and
unfavorable vreather. MW.OIIIO Hall
should be crowded with an audience
from among our-best citizens to hear a
lecture on •Inventors and their !oven.
tient," by toe Hon. Samuel 8. Fisher,
United States Commissioner of Patents.
Mr. Fisher caret, to Plttalmrgh under the
auspices of a few gentlemen who knew
*the man and thought what he had toss} ,
on tee subject would prove of especial
interest In our practical, working, in
ventive community. It were high atm
pllment to the lectnrer that although the
announcement of his entertainment was
very brief, there could bo gathered so
soon, an audience so largo and so con
spicuous for Intel Hassles and disecrimlna
tion—that from the ranks of preachers,
and physicians, and lawyers, and me.
chutes, and tradesmen, and students,
all C 11113611 and professions, representa
tives, extended him a cordial greeting.
They who attended were exceedingly
fortunate. In a long course of lecture
going we do not remember to have ever
heard a more entertaining, instructive
and spicy discourse, er one which could
more truthfully be styled an intellectual
treat. Asa literary production, abound.
Ind In (eminence, wit and pathos, and as
a grand collation of Useful Information,
tt was finished and perfect, while the
charm of a graceful and very pleasing
oratory knit additional leamnation and
Interest to the words which were spoken
and the thoughts evolved. '
About eight o'clock the - the lecturer.
was introduced by General hfoorheed,-
who in • few felictums remarks, referred
to an Metered In his ow-p. life when be
discovered that he was not an Inventor,
and that inventors like poets were "born
not made."
Air. Fisher uoon comhtq forward
wee greeted with applause. After
a few Introductory am:Canoes ox.
planatory of his visit to Pittsburgh,
he commenced with a description of
TEM PATENT
Which he and was d marble building in
Washington, with lofty pontoons and
Vaulted hal lo, which no visitor to, the
capital omits to enter. Fair and dainty
brides and proud bridegrooms, little
children, stately matrons, bustling men
and auelent dames triune &belong flight
of stairs in onmeleas flow throughout the
official day. When they left their coun
try homes, it was one of the charges of
traveled Mende that they should by no
means forget the Patent Office. When
they shall nib:train tell their own story,
they will not fall to name it among the
wonders which they have seen.
If you should follow one of these groups
into the great halls of the building, you
might perchance expect to find them
pouring over great inventions. This rea
sonable expectation will not, however,
be realized. The gentle creatures who
oner, pass by the wilderness of models;
they walk - with steps that never halt
through the long lines of cameo contain.
lug the inventions in every class from
agriculture to wood working; they do
not even stop at patented bonnets,
patented hoop skirts, patented . credlesor
rejected baby Jumpers. They halt only
to be weighed, or .to gaze with curious
eyneupon the old clothes and pewter
wawa of Washington or the broken china
and moth-eaten blankets of his wife.
=I
But there la another class who also
ascend those stem for whom the groat
building has a charm of a different kind.
Sernetimes yen may see some thoughtful
face and head of unkempt hair sur
mounting a bowed form and plain gate,
that slowly passes from the street to the.
great door of matinee. Under the
breast of a well worn coat is hidden a
package earefhlly wrapped In some vit.
lags newspaper—only a few tilts of wood
and brans deftly put together, yet repro.
tenting a diomie of thought, a long
mitten of tantalizing experiments, and the
whole of the little savings of a lifetime.
This is an Inventor. Ue MTh* his in
vention under his arm. Ma breast
alternately beats high with hope,
as be • thinly of possible fame and •
fortune, or. Sinks with dispair as he an.
nelson, rejection and beggary. I think
that it was Theodore Parker who Bald
that the saddest sight he ever saw was
an inventor going down the steps of the
Patent Office with his rejected model in
hi. hands. There was written In his
face so mum that told of dead hopes and
a lost life. It is a pity to spoil a good
story by the suggestion that as the office
keeps the rejected models as well as
those that are patented, this precise bt•
cident could not have oriented. It Is not
necessary to spoil it, for, with or without
models In their bands, many sadly dig.
appointed men have come back from the
world of Imagination to the world of
reality.
11E6 RIJEOTED monst.
Ifo one can wander through the long
which °Rages the rejected model.,
without bestowing a tall rued of gym.
pathy upon the wrecked hopes that lie
stranded all around him. If all the
sighs and tears that are represented there
were gathered together, they would unite
in a wail of woe that would remind us of
a bhunber of horrors in Dante's Inferno.
But, there are lights as well u shad
-owe In the picture. Many a modest and
almost hopeless toiler has left these
strong walls to find himself• first famous
and then rich..., L,ok well at these stoop.
lug shoulders. They may yet find then:l
iaised' taxed to bear the weight of the
honor that shall be heaped upon them.
Despise not this little model, for, In this
humble guise, into this and like places,
have come, for the drat time, all the
great inventions that have blessed man
kind, and made the ago a marvel. (Ap

DEMANDS OPOI 4 I INVENTORS
Our inventor, with his model under
his arm, was left in his search of protect
nos. We demand of him a reed Inven
tion in exchange. He mien:shave some
thing to dispose of. Like the magician
In the story of Aladdin, be must give us
“new lamps for old ones." He must not
have filched his Ideas from other men.
Ha most be an original inventor. Then,
too, he must also be the first; for, It not
unfrequently happens, that while there
can be but one find inventor there are
many who are original.
Some ideas are - the fruit of • lucky
suggeation, and have beenstrunbled over
almost without - seeking.others, on the
other hand, have been the keystones In
archea, slowly and palnfelly erected by
patient toil and long experiment.
THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH
In the days when ethernet:lips were
almost unknown, a party of gentlemen
In the cabin of e packet orosslng from
Europe to America were discussing the
new discovery • of electro-magnedam.
Among them was one, wpointer by pro
lemon, who was greatly interested In
the subject, and a suggestion being made
that the new force might In some way be
employed in the triumnalsalon of Canals,
be became so absorbed In it that he gave
up his:profetudon, and commenced the
thorough Investigation of the subject.
with the view to the Invention of a plan
for telegraphing. On this ship In mid
ocean, 'from the brain of Morse, came
forth the electro.magriono telegraph.
Now this nursling which the. ocean
rocked has become Its conqueror By
the genius of this man messages of life
and death, of love, of ambition, of bar
gain and • sale, of friendly greeting, of
, tierce defiant*, the tidings of the battle,
the proclamation of peace, the vagaries
of the gold , earner, the words of states.
men and the voice of the people, are
borne upon the wings of the lightning to
the uttermost parts of the earth. [Ap-
plause.]

The lecturer now described at length
the rigid ordeal to which every Invention
Is subjected, and said the character of
ibis examination indicates what should
be the character of the examiners who
are to make it. The highest scientific
acquirements, the most acute legal dis
crimination, the clearest logic, the beat
powers of comparison and analysis, may
rind abundant employment in such an
Mike.
' It has, therefore, seemed to me so self
evident that skilled labor only, and that
of a high order, should be received into
tho. examinerslaips of the Patent Mice.
that I have felt myaelfj waited in instat
ing upon two propositions: I. That no
man should be placed in charge of &class
as a principal exaaduer who has not
previously served in the lower grade of
:resistant: and, 2. That, to the poelkion of
ssaistant, appointments should be made
only on the baits of merit, to be weer
tained by a competitive examination.
Two of sash examination have already
been held. -I need scarcely say that the
result did not, in all cases, sword with
the recommendations on tile, nor was
it always la proportion to the previous
“pressure" of tho candidate or his
friends.
AN %REM CORRECTIM.
The Patent Offlus, contrary, to tile pop
ular impression. make no rigid exam
ination into the nillity of inventhms. If
the alleged Improvement la new, and
will work at all, and is not immoral or
mischievous, a patent Ls granted.- It is
assumed that If Cite invention Is good for
nothing nobody will want It, and that
use, and not aptoulation, is the beet test
of utility. -
rYPILO , VIWENTII AVID ORIGIN/LLB.
In . the present state of invention, of
mono, the vast Majority of patenUi are
grunted fur Improvements' upon forma of
mttehlnes elreetlythralatemoe. .
It seem. hardly =ossuary to lay to an
intelligent audience that the Inventor of
the improvement cannot 111118 the orig
inal machine without consent of ha to.
ventor, nor can the patentee of the orig.
it= machine use the Improvement with
out the consent of the patentee of the
latter; and yet from ignorance or neg
lect of this obvious rule the greater part
of the litigation and trouble arising
under patents ban Its origin.
This point may be worth illustration.
The ling man who discovered that a
force could be exerted by the movement
of a piston caused by the expansion of
steam, was entitled to put under tribute
every steam engine, whether vertical,
horhoontal or rotary. Neverthelesa, If
some ono after plot invented some new
form of valve, the former could net take
presseimion of it by virtue of hie Invention
of the eng:='; cot CCRid the patentee of
the valve take the engine by virtue of
his invention of the valve. -

The fire, so far as we could ascertain.
wu the result of carelessness on the plat

It appears that men were engaged in

which the gas ignited and the explosion
ensued. The pumping house was an.

the receiving tank, whichwas partly
filled with crude oil. and the tank and
the oil were both burned. A large
bleaching tank stood near the receiving
