Entlyoiv' FOR TILL WENS.
The market has been very iltet du
ring the week which has just closed, and
with a light volume of business.. in the
aggregate. the feeling is weak and offish,
and compared with last week, prices are
lower. Trade is not what it ought to be
or nenelly la at this season of the year,
and while the prospects are not very en•
couraging, hopes of an early improve
ment are still entertained.. The ship

what, averaging between 1,000 to 1,500
bbls per day, but if. all our refineries
were in full blast, the average .would be
somewhere between 1,600 and 4,000 per
day. As we noted the other day, how.
ever, the ehipmeuts from January Ist to
date are somewhat in excess of the same
time last year, notwithstanding the
sales during the first three months of
1889 were doubtless three or four times
larger than same time this year. This li
easily explained.. teat year speculation'
ran high, and thin:wands upon thouurids
of barrels of oil were sold open paper,
which were sever made nor delivered
nor was this the understanding when the
sales were effected. When these coo.
tracts matured, settlement' were made
by cash -differentiae, and this accounts
for the large operations and small @hip.
manna Taus far this year, there has
been an almost total absence of anything
like a speculative mania and the result
is, that while the sales have been much
smaller, there is an increase in the ship.

The eastern and foreign markets have.

quoted higher, though as already inti

both crude and refined are lower, and
the majority of the trade inclined to be
bearish. Antwerp is quoted lower than
