PIiTSOURGii MARKETS
OFFICE OP Prr - rrincrton GAzrrrs,
TIMBAL/ V, April 14, 1570.
Tha markets, although steady and
fairly active, are devoid of anything es
pecially new or important. There is a
continued steady demand for all of the
loading commoditlea and with an im
proved business in the aggregate, pikes,
generally, are well 'sustained. The Pro
visions market is particularly active and
couslderabiy stronger, and this being
the case, dealers are not sci anxious to
roa.ine, and the composition Is not near so
strong as it has been. There has been
coustderable 'tootling and stashing"
withal the put month or so, but the
course or the market during the past
few days has squelched this out pretty
well. Grata market is firm with a
steady local demand, with no change to
make in quotations, and the seine re
mark.. will apply to groceries.

The oil market conUnuee very weak
and offish, and, in the - absence of any
fear rnovemtnts, appeara tc_ be sinking
under the !Mitt:ace of its own weight.
As wo have repeatedly stated, operators
hero aro mottlyi besrlsh, not that they
are directly int3roated in lower prices,
but because the impression Is gaining
strength that they are still too high,
and that there Is no chance for brightens
to improve until the trade become pretty
well satisfied that the bottom has been
touched The fact that the eastern ani
foreign markets are weak and drooping,
together with the increased production,
Is not without be effect, and it Is these
and other considerations that causes-op
erators here to predict still lower prices.
So far as the manufacturer is conoerned,
it makee but little difference whether
prime are high or low—what they desire
is a steady market, and a fair manntan
tuner's margin.
