A good deal has been said time - and
again about Cleveland In connection
with the ell business, that she weir and
is in a fair way of eclipsing Pittebtogh,
or in other words, that she will loon be
able to monopolize the business. These
assertions have been media so often, and,
that too, without commutation, that some
' people, not very well posted in oil mat
ters, have began to be impressed with
the boilerthat there is something In them.
That In some respects she has the ad
vantage of Pitteuurgh, particularly In
the matter ot freights to the aseaboaid,
we believe is contaided, bat this Will
only be temporary, stiletto in other re
itvictsh hse advantages _and
facilities which Cleveland does not
f njoy. To show that the refining Interest
there is nut ao bright as some hate been
led to believe, and that it is not In much,
If coy, better condliion than it is here, I
we will refer to an operation in property
there recently, which will fully limier the
ground. A very large refining ester,
lishment was mold there recently, laid to
have cost close on to fii.100,0011; some of
the partners in Ihe concern were bought
out by the remaining partners, i t the rats
of 00,000 for the refinery iii.o forty
acres of valuable ground. If the oil
business was In each a prosperous con
dition there, as has boon represented, it
is not likely thet the partners In this
large concern would have sold out at
such a sacrifice. Bed and all as the oil
business looks hare, we are pretty sure
that none of oar refiners would cell at
such a loss, and once we get anything
like • decent rate of freight to the sea,
board, Pittsburgh will continuo to carry
