gold. It is the medium through which in
termer years we bate paid for our surplus
importations. This year we have shipped
cotton abroad in ben of gold, and with
our bonda rapidly appreciating in value,
and finding ready purchasers throughout
'rope, the Eastern Continent is in our
debt, and must send its gold to this mar
ket to settle'the balance. Henceit is that
the premium steadily but sorely declines,
and must continue to decline, until it
reaches par.
The tendency to this desirable result le
only retarded by, popular but erroneous
apprehensions of serials commercial dis
asters. The prevalent idea is that all
values must decline In exact proportion to
the premium on gold. This is only
measurably true. The current prices of
most staple merchandise Inflated during
the war hare already been approximated
to a gold standard. Other goods have
been recently put down by the merchants
in anticipation of the decline in gold. As
a matter of fact the most of our iner
' chants have put their houses In order and
made such full - preparation for the inevi
table return to a specie basil of trade that
they will be in no serious manner affected

is room for it to tumble. Speculators in
grain will suffer undoubtedly, but profes
