Gold aeema to be steadier .to-day and
a reaction from the lowest point, 110%

place. The more sanguine bears prc-

cured, whilst gold sold at 11033. The
oversold condition of the gold market,
together with the desire of the stock

advance the premium four or five per

general rush for gold in the hope to

THURSDAY, March 10, 1070.
As wo noted yesterday, there are some
articles that have fluctuated but very
little since the decline in gold, and this
is owing to the fact ' that theie sleep.
Honel oommoditles were down to and
even below a gold bads, sixty days ago.
noir and Wheat, notwithstanding they
are weak and dull, are not quotably
lower, and we should not be surprised if
gold was to settle down at 108 or 110, to
see Breadstuff's better, from the simple
fact that they are kiwir than gold or
anything else. We clip the following
from a Chicago paper, of Wednesday, in
regard to the feeling there in regard to
wheat :
"Notwithstanding 'the lower prices
ruling, however, holders of wheat—that
is the men who have purchased round
lotsof this cereal to hold until naviga
tion opens and they can ship It to the
seaboard—were not at all discomposed,
though the chronic scalpers and "bears"
were making all sorts of predictions as
to when a reaction would occur, one
operator setting the price as low as 62c,
but they were all afraid to sell any round
lots soort at the current prices, and if
they did sells "five" they took it in
again Just as soon as they could do so at
an Insignilloant profit. The fact Is the
"bears"•have not got the nerve to break
the market badly, and if they are not
very careful the ..balls" will get the best
of them on the turn. There Ise very
large amount of wheat here and else
where we know, but It requires a great
deal to meet all demands. There will
undoubtedly be a much smaller area of
wheat sown in the United States this
year than last, for the very good reason
thatit does not pay, and though prices
may go down considerably lower than
at present, it is folly to believe that
wheat will never sell above 780 per
bushel. About all the wheat going Into
LlverPool at the present time is Ameri
can, and had there not been a material
advance in ocean freights in New York
to-day it is more than prohsble the ex
port demand would have been better."

were by no means large, scarcely an

the few that were on baud, seeme d be
unusually timid, buying very sparingly,

Notwithstanding the arrivals continue
light, the market continues very dull
and heavy, and compared with lest
week, prices have declined from X to 3‘
alletit per pound, and even at this reduo•
lion the demand was light. As in the
case of cattle, shippers are buying very
sparingly, doing as it 15 familiarly
termed, a band•lo•month business, and
as a general thing they are very
bear
lab,".talking the market down. It is
true, hogs have declined sharply withi n
li s o pug sixty days, but they, are still, in
the eyes of shippers, too high, and mon,
sooner or later, 'decline still further.
The demoralized condition of the provi
sions market, both east and welt, is
pointed at 'significantly, and Ms argued
that the product is much lower, rela
tively, than the principal, and the one
moat sympathize with the other. The
demand for hogs in the eastern markets
has fallen off very materially within the
buyingry days, and shippers are not
ono-half the number th ey did
in December and January, notwithstand
ing prices are much lower.
Philadelphia Hogs. are now quoted at

Yorkers at 834@18 . 34, against 13.,4@9 last
week.

The sheep market 'has been modern
lively active thii week, and with a de
mand count equal to the supply, prices
have been pretty well sustained, - and It is
somewhat singular In view of the fact
that both huge and cattle did se badly.
Had there been anything like an over
supply. It requires no prophet to foretell
the result; but as it turned out, there
wee just about 'enough and no more to
meet the demand, and consequently
holden, as already Intimated, experi
enced but little diniculty in obtaining
hat week's prices -4W CUL is the range,
