Total last week 40 care
Notwithstanding the supply was only
moderate, and the weather favorable,
the complainlog among the drovers WWI
loud and bitter, and the butchers, also,
growled considerably. The great '
trouble Ilea In the fact that Cattle are toe
high in the west—prices are relatively
higher In Chlcago than here; butchers
cannot advance the price of meat and
consequently cannot payee advance for
cattle, and without an advance drovers
can make nothing, and it Is possible that
some of them lost money to-day. It is
said, and we have no doubt it is true,
that all the cattle on sale from Chicago,
comprising 30 car loads, out of the entire
I 40, cost a quarter more than those of last
week, though, sus will be seen by refer
ence to the report of males, prices ruled
no higher than last week. and the pre
sumption Is that the drover lied to 'hand
the loss of that quarter of a oent and in
some Instances even more. We know
that these drovers are always growling,
but that they had good Cause to complain
this week Is generally conceded.
The great proportion of the cattle on,

eral car loads that were not put upon the

Weather continues cold and decidedly
winterieh, with every appearance or
more snow. Mercury. stood at 30 to 31
nearly all day, but was falling again last
evening.
Business is moderately active at the
landing; es much so as could reasonably
be expected under existing circumstan
ces. Freights arc plenty enough but
shippers appear to be holding back In
hopes ofreduced rates.
The Argosy is still laid up, but will
probably make a move some of those
days soon. ,
The hull for Capt. Wash Kerr's new
Porusmodth packet, should reach here
soon, as ho expects to have her out this
spring.
Died at his residence Routh Pitts

nut bean steamboating here for several
years. .
—Says the Cincinnati Conurtercial,.of
Saturday: A rumor reaches us to the
effect that the pilots of different trades
can not agree on terms. There was an
apparent "war among the roses" yester
day, but as the. knights of the wheel
were generally reticent, and the stumen-
Mon bridge remains lb its accustomed
place we apprehend no harm. Further
developments may come to light to-day.
—ln regard to the proposed enlarge
meta of the canal around the falls of the
Ohioriver at Louisville, - Ky., General
Weitzell, Government Engineer, In
charge of the work, bee stated that he
can, by the Brat of November next, put
the canal into condition to pass steam
boats of three hundred and fifty feet in
length by sixty-four.broad. But the
funds are not yet fortcoming.
—The Piles for the bridge across the
Illinois at Beardstown are driven on the
Beardstown side, and the timbers for the
bridge are being rapidly brought for
ward. The work of constructing the
piers is now progressing, and the piers
are bong driven on the opposite aide of
the river.
—The sale of the steamer Dexter . by .
County Treasurer Graf, of New Albany,
has been postponed until the 18th hint..
In order to enable the Treasurer to lay
before the County Board a petition from
Captain Montgomery for a reduction of
the assessment on- which the claim for
delinquent taxes Le based.
