The arrivals of cattle are light and
have been ao lbr several wkoks, and the
great proportion of the receipts are
through cattle, owned by Alexander and
others, bought ln the west and shipped
direct to New York. The 'waive!" to.
day footed 64 cars, 61 of which were
through cattle, leaving but throe cars for
this market. Then, again, It is said that
the great proportion of the western ship
pers. who heretofore tame sent titer
cattle to this market, have for several
weeks past been shipping to Buffalo;
considering that a better market than
this,
eaternbtuhye e suwlt
h is o t he re a

been buying hers , have been buying In
Buffalo and Baltimore. This is a matter,
however, that will rectify Itself sooner
or later. - . The time will doubtless come
again when this wi ll be the bent point
for the western shippers, and whenever
that time entree the cattle will come
this way again, and then eastern buyers
will come here instead of the points al
luded to.
Compared with last week the market
Iresents but little that la really new or
mportant. Prices are without quotable
change, and the sales comparatively
light, and the offerings, as already In
timated, are limited.

RIVER NEWS.,
—A letter to • Western paper says
that the mammoth canal around the
Dee Moines rapid" commences at Kee,.l
kuk and terminates seven miles up the
river; that it will deprive Keokuk of Its
title, ..The Gate City;" that over /PO
laborers are now employed on the csnal
and that the work will cost the Govern.
mint millions of dollar'. And yet the
above work is ne more important to' .
commercial interests than the oomple.l
lion of the new canal_at Louisville, the
work on which het dragged wearily
along for ec many years, for want of • ,
few thousand only from the Government.
—The Indianapolis Comatereird saYst
New Albany chuckles that the bridge ,

targets. It Is but • few years since the
river interests in the West were varr
mount to all others; but no greater prod
of their decadent:a could be given than
the fact that railroads are putting up
hridges everywhere without regard to
the damage to navigation, and the
united influence of river men has no per
ceptible effect on either Congress or
Legialatares. Still the lower rivers will
yet give employment to more steamers
than ever before, as It is not likely that
railroads will bovery numerous on these
alluvial bottoms these many years.._ .....
.....
To which the New Albany Limiter re-
spends: The Commercial is quite right
in its cancluaiona. The cheap tranator
talon afforded by our Western rivers
will always give profitable employment
to hundreds of steamboats. At the pre".
eat time the complaint is general that
there are not half enough boats to carry
the freight and passengers offering. mad,
with returning prosperity In the South,
this demand wilt be largely increased.
