The entire market In bonds, stocks
and gold looks weak and dull, favora
ble to a goncral decline, without any,
specific Ca 1/10. except that the public do
not buy stocks at present high pikes
and will likely hold off for same time.
Tho markets are sustained...only bythe
extreme cattier the money marktit and
the dullness'of . bindings in general.
Gold opened at 120%, advanced to
1202;, but finally settled down to 1203 f,
with a very heavy martet.
Government bonds are also dull and
have declined about one percent from
the highest point, keeping pace, with
gold.
Money comparatively, *- easy, but all
that is offered is at favorable rater.
In local securities Allegheny Valley
bonds, which have advanced from 81 to
85%, are now Joffered at that., Connell&
vine Railroad bonds about 84, City Ave
per cent. about 76, and County securi
ties from 76 to 85.

There Is no change to note In the oil
business; the general aspect continues,
ite it been some time put, unealls•
fsetory and unfavorable, with but little
prospect of any immediate improve
ment. Crude is still firm above, en
tirely too much so for this market, as
prices are much higher, relatively, there
than here, so that there is no margin for
either dealer br redder, and much high
er here, relatively, than refined. And,
as might be expected, with no margin,
there lino dispealtiou to do anything,
and this is likely to continue until a
margin has been secured; it is true, the
shipments of relined east from this point
have increased materially within the
past two weeks, but these Increased
shipments can not be regarded as show
ing an Improved market. The oil now
going forward, or at least the groat pre
p:it of it, is to fill contracts made In

were much higher than at present; no
refiner can sell at present quotations of
crude and refined, and make anything,

wish to say a few words to those who
lost friends .by the explosion of the
steamer Ma gn olia. to the end that they
may not entirely blame Jerome Stevens,
the - engineer, Prior to this accident my
brother-in-law, Dock Prather, visited
our house, and talked to my hitsband
about the Inhere of the boat not being
safe. They both agreed that they were
burned out, and were mutate..My
brother-ln.law said that so money oonld
induce him to run the engine with those
boilers, because they would explode
some of these Says certain, and we
would live to see It. A short time af.
tamer& I heard my husband ask Mr.

boat. He said: "Ton know these are
burned out: they are not ears, and I
don't think it Is tight to run the boat
with such boUerap Mr. Cheeenaan's
only reply was. "We'll see about It."
About three weeks before the explosion
Mr. Prather called me to his bedside
and said; "I want to talk with you. If
I die at home I want you to bury me
I with my lather and mother; but if I stay
on the boat lam afraid I will not dle at
home. The hollers are burned out. I
have told Cheesman, Shaw, Bart Gard.

boilers placed in the boat. I have told
them that It wan not right to endanger
the lives of officers and passengers In
this way." On the morning of the day
upon which the explosion occurred Mr.
Prather said to me: "I wish the hack
had not come to take me to the boat, for
I would rather stay at home." I told
him to iday. "No, I had batter

came true in a few short hours. If
Jerome Stevens, the engtnear had been
tried and convicted of mans laughter, I
would not have been willing that he
should suffer.alone, for the rest of the
owners of the boat should have ahared
the blame of carelessness, for one was
as much to blame as the other.

—We clip the following from the

that their bid was the lowest and beat,
and consequently that the contract was
