If the weather would only turn in
cold and dry, there not much doubt
but what business would improve, but
as It Is, the markets, generally, appear
to be a little more active,. though there
is still plenty of room for 'lmprovement.
The arrivals of dour, grain and produce
generally, appear to be on the Jncrease,
and the indicathms are that stocks,
which were pretty well reduced, will
soon be up to the usual standard. We
&rein hopes that th 4 demand for every
thing will Improve, and that the stagna
lion which has prevailed rim some time
past will be succeeded by that activity
and bonyancy which 'Should and usually
does prevail at this season of the year.

neglected, and devoid of a single new
feature worthy of special notice. There
are :Mow, however, who regard the pres
ent stagnation as a goed omen, fore
boding a deterrolication on the part of
the trade to do a legitimate business;
and if this, If rigidly adhered to, it Is
contended that the trade st large will be
greatly benekited thereby. As we have
repeatedly stated, manufacture:a, gener
ally are disposed to discourage any
movement tha: is calculated L.:intimidate
wild speculation, and to this feeling may
be attributed the Inactivity that now
prevails and about which there le coneid•
arable complaint being made. From
this standpoint, therefore, It is fair to
conclude that the trade la In a healthy
condition, notwithstanding business la
very dull, with but little prospect of any
laimediate Improvement. It may seem
strange, yet It Is Mated to be a fact, that

legitimate business, made money, while
those who devoted their time and
