PITTSBURGH DAILY_GAZETTE: TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 18, 1870,
♦ STOBF FOB THE BOTH.
How a Lad Hhealad_Mmaolf Into
Forums and Influence.
At a meeting of the stockholders of a
prOminent iallway corporation, recently
held in this city, there were present two
gentlemen, both well up In years, one
however, Considerably the senior °flee—
other. In talking of old times
gone by,
the yeunger gentleman called the atten
tion of his friends and told a pleasant
little story which should be read with
profit by every poor, Industrious and
striving lad.. We use his own language:
"Nearly half a century ago, gentlemen, '
I was pat upon the world to make my
living. I was stout, willing and able,
considering my then tender yeara, and
secured a place in a hardwartratore to
do all scale of chores required. I was
paid seventy.five dollars per year for
my boyish services. Otto day, Vier I
had been at Worn three months or more,
my friend there, Mr. )1, who holds his
ago remarkably well, came into the
atom and bought a large bill of shovels
and tongs, sad-Irons and pans, buck.
ets, scrapers arid Ratifies, for be
was to be married next day, and was sup.
plying his household In advance as was
the groom's custom in those days. Teo
&Melee were packed on' the barrow and
made a load antllcleralY heavy .for
. young male. But more will
ing than able, I started off, proud
that I could move 'each a, • mean
on the` wheelbarrow. I got. on
remarkably well till 1 struck the mud
road, now Seventh avenue, leading to
my friend 8.11. - house. There I tolled
and tugged and tugged and tolled, but
could not budge the load up the hill, the
wheel going It's full half diameter la the
mud every time I would try to
.propel
forward. Finally a good-natured Irish
man passing by with a dray took: my
barrow, self and. all on his vehicle,
and'
in consideration of my promise to-pay
him a " bit" landed me at iny destine
! tion. I counted the &Melee Carefully
as >I • delivered thew , and with
my empty barrow trudged by way
back. Whistling- . with glee. over
my triqmph over difficulty. Some week.
after I paid the Irishman the "tilt" and
never got it back- from my employers.
[Mr, B. I am sure, would have remuner
ated me, but he never before heard thus
'story, Ass if he is Inclined he can comm.°.
mils the debt by sending me a bushel of
his rare ripe peaches next fall.] • But to
the moral. A merchant had witnessed
my struggles and how =dowdy I labor
ed to deliver that . load of hardware; he
even watched me to the house and saw
me count each piece as I landed It in the
doorway. He sent for me next day,
asked my 'name. told me he had • reward
for my Industry and cheerfulness under
difficulty, In the shape of a live hundred
dollar clerkship In his extendve estab
lishment. I accepted., and now alter
naarl„Y.a ball esottuy has passed, I look
back and say I wheeled myself Into all
1 own, for that reward of persavereance
was my grand stepping atone tofortun e."
The speaker was a very wealthy
banker, a man of Influence and position,
and one universally respected for many
good qualities of head and heart. Boys ;
take a moral from this little story and
be willing and industrious. -, You do not
know how many eyes are upon you to
discover whether - you are sluggish
and careless, or industrious and Willing,
or how many there are who, if you are
moral and worthy, will give you • stop.
ping stone to wealth and position.

Dropsy. •
The term Dropsy signifies a morbid
accumulation of water In the names or
cavities, the mostganend cane being a
special Malt:pity existing either . in a
functional or organic affection of the
kidneys.
It is often complicated with affections
of other cranes, as - thi liver, itingl,
heart, stomach, spleen, etc., to determine
which lea desideratum, to. be obtained
many timea only by an examination of
the urine.
•
By whatever combined influences
Money may ensue, - the blood first par.
takes of theseand Imparts the peculiar
characteristics to the urine—the coerce.
pending chantreerin the bleed end urine
always going hand in hand In. everrva
riety of this affection.
The most formidable., case or uncom.
',heated dropsy, we are happy to say,
can many times be readily relieved by a
very dumb, remedy. • t.
This remedy we are In possession of.
and have cured hundredi of oasesynth it
alone.
One of the most formidable of this kind
that came under our notice far year,,
wee that of Mts. )(vim Tisir fpsab
Macon, Pa. She was entrutouslyewelled,'
had a - bad cough, difficulty of breathing,
and wan much debilitated.
We sent her a smell package whichao
duced , the . swelling,. end the iteoind
course of medicine completed the cure.
Another extraordinary case was that
of Kr. —; of_this county, a meu. over
seventy years old. He was not only
enormously swelled, but bad moth
cough, asthma end palpitation. He was
entirely cored by a week's trestniebt; '
and although three years have elapsed,
he has had no totem of -the cedimudet,
and Is pleased to call and see us
sionallyand entwine hie iratifude.
!Another case lives In Jefferson comity,
Ohio; an , old man Whole physicians gave
dim no bop of recovery, sod whose
friends had almost despaired of Mit:life;
We never maw this patient, but sent him
a package of medicine which mired him.
We have cared hundred' of ". eases of
Dropsy; with but a single package 4 of
medicine each , and at _cost less than
ti, dollars. Bend • specimen of 'Urine,
and have the medicine sent., ,
