PETROLEUM MARKET.
017101 or Prrrermatirt GAzirrre,
MONDAY Jan. 10, 1070. S
The oil market was rather quiet to
day, compared with Satprday crude
seemed to be weaker, while renew la
steady, with some inquiry for lines, but
refiners, generally, are not inclined to
sell aimed, and consequently, there Is
but little doing. A late New York paper
says "that no cargo or crude has been
reported as sold for • long time. The
Indifference In buyers for export, ho'
ever, Is explained, by the fact that the
prices of petroleum, although unusu
ally low, are not really in the -relative
wooer ootuddering the great decline in
the premium on gold. Elo long as gold
premium remains where it is now, pe
troleum connot command Its former
figures," The same paper, which Is in
alined to .be rather beari sh, also says,
"that private advices from the oil re.
gions report the sock of Crude si being
enormously large. Elegem of stock
comblned with alacknesa of demand and
the low gold premium, moat bring the
price of crude lower, and per conse
quence that of refined, II sales are to be
made, or else foreign buyers must ad
vance their price in order Jo meet the
decline in gold hem. Foreign buyers
ought to remember one thing that they
seem to ignore almost entirely, and that
is, that imusmadri as a large majority of
the investments In oU lands were made
when the gold premium was at it. moat
lodated point, it is almost ruinous for
producers of crude oil to sell It at gold
prices. This la, of coarse, a matter that
the laws of supply and demand will
regulate in time; but foreign consumers
and buyers will not long be able to re-
Gist the necessity of' raising their prices
if the trade In petroleum is to continue,
and the on gold Is to decline
gradually to par. Indeed the price of
crude oil has already gone so low as to
' atop some of the "pump" wells at the
creek; but still the (pinion of the pro
ducer Is that In order to effect, sales the
price mud go lower !yet."

The market, compared with Saturday
quiet and hardly eo strong, though
r Hoes are unchanged; 12n was the 'best

but few buyers evert at that, with offers
to sell at 13.

The refined market Is quiet and de
