FINANCE- AND TRADE
' Orgun ov Prrreztosee Gas:erre,

Great excitement prevailed In all the
financial drpartmenta, on the report
Gast a grog bull movement was to be
Inaugurated by the former leaders of
Brio sad Gold cliques. Bo far the
ground work is laid, and the prospects
for a large advance in bonds and stocks
are fair. Before the close of the old
year evorytbing was bearish, but the
change of programme On the part of the
Secretary Of the Treasury changed the
views of the leaders of Well Street. anil
gold, bonds and stocks hiving : about
touched as low a point as they could be
expected; and the state of the money
market being for continued sue until
the spring business will open, It is quite
natural that the bulls would 'have their
day. lint aside from all this, the pro
posed creation of new banking capital,
in the shape of one hundred millions
Of currency, to De Issued to national
banks to be created, is the great lever In
the prospective hull movement.

that quarter. The highest quotation for
gold on Saturday was 123%, and the
lowest 12135, with inquiet fluctuations

nese. The strength of the gold market
consists in the unusual large number of
small speculators, who wore attracted
by the low price of geld and the large'
amounts held and paid for by the leaders
in the beptember excitement. It would
not be st all astonlehlng If gold would
- advance above 128, although the Gov.
ernmeat may try to prevent a further
advance. The amount, however. In the
Treasury, and the actual property of the
Government, Is not over twenty millions,
and can not Increase to over thirty-five
millions by the brat of March.
Government bonds have advanced
rather rapidly, and may react, but If
gold'advsnoes bonds will follow.
Stocks are strong and appear to be on
a grand rise. The prospective ease In
the money market will likely bat for
some limo, aid enable operators to have
their stock carried cheaply.

Is becoming quite formidable. The Mo.

the greater part of the day.
Navigation is virtually suspended, and
will continue so until the winter mod..

cud would all have departed on Satur

Friday for Pittsburgh, The towboat
Grand Lake arrived there on Friday.
—The 'Cate Henderson has ..backed

—The St. Louis Dernocrat, of Thars
day, says: Mr. David Campbell, of this
city, leaves on Sunday for the Ohio, de-.
signing to give out a contract to build a
ferryboat for service at Carondelet. She
will be 14G or 145 fest long. 25 feet beam,
center wheel, 26 ,Inch oylinder, 6 feet
stroke, and have i boilers, each 22 feet
long.
—By order of the department all 11.
conies issued to engineers and pilots,
after January 1, 1870, must be placed In
the cabin of the steamer on which they
are employed, ender penalty of revoca
tion. A new form, of handsome design;
Printed on bank note paper, has been

—Captain J. F. Killing has sold the
towboat Jim Watson to Brodhead, Hay
k Co., of Louisville, for $6,500. TWO pun
chums have the contract for building
bridges over the Cumberland and Ten.
nevem rivers, for the Elizabeth & ?ado-.
cab Railroad. Captain K. will purchase
a boat of greater power than the Watson
, for towing in the Kentucky river.
—We clip the following from the
Louisville Courier, of Friday; The
Messenger, from New Orleans to Pitts
burgh, deeply laden, got out on Gener
al WeittePs dam, just above the mouth
of the canal, yesterday, and was still
there last night. She broke her capstan,
in trying to pull of. She is lying
perfectly straight, and, as the river is
rising, will doubtless get off without
much trouble. Lines were got on: to
the shore to keep her from going over
the dam, and the channel is effectually
blockaded by them. The Lorene, from
New Orleans to Pittsburgh, came through
the canal just after the Messenger, and
was compelled to tie up to the bank be
low her. She discharged considerable
freight hers.
—The following which we cap from
the Evansville Journal, is very comp

nitun We had the pleasure of meeting,
yesterday, Captain Entry Hayward, who
hu Jolt returned from 'Pittsburgh,
whither he went to mottle with the Man
ranee companies for the lose of the
steamer Linton, which .was insured In
the Pittsburgh dt People's Company, for,
if we mistake not, 910,000. He reached
Pittsburgh on the morning of the 29th,
and before four o'clock r. m. bad every
thing closed, up, the company paying
him 18,000, and he keeping the wreck.
This prompt action on the part of the
Pittsburgh d. People's Company Is
- highly commendable, and in striking
contrast with some of the Insurance
offices farther West.
—The Anderson was on her way up
the river and the Ht.. Charles was going
down.. The Anderson blew her whistle,
bht, her pilot says,' without receiving
any answer from the Bt. Charles, which,
when discovered, was steering direct for
the Anderson, head on. The Anderson
