the recent movements In (ogres look

Wanness, The Special Commissi oner
of -the lieVenne, in hiv recent iepjlt to
Congress, has stated that the average
ant of making pig iron In this coon.
try, itailndlng liberal interest upon cap
ital entployed, Is from twenty-four to
twenty-six dollars per ton, that execs.
MVO profits are now made in that manu
facture, , that "the - price of pia iron to
coneutners has been unneceeaarily en.
haneeffiluring the past year to an aver
age of from eight to ten dollars per ton,",
and that a majority ..consumers and
Workers of pig iron not themselves en
gaged in its manufacture, sustain him In
the recommendation to rednee the tariff
to three dollars per ton. Now. therefore
Besolved,.That we, as manufacturers,
hereby, declare that, the foregoing state.
Meats, so for as they apply to the cost of
making pig Iron and the profile result.
log therefrom In this region, are utterly
untrue, and frombar knowledge of the
business in other parts of the country,
we believe them to be ho more applies,.

%eels, or the average of them all than to
Our own.
Reialiled, That this mooting, composed
In pert of consumers and workers of pig
Iron not engaged in lie manufacture, of
operators andisborers in rolling mills
and furnaces, and of citizens engaged in
other pursuits, melte this disUnct and
unequivocal abatement, tbat .we are
unanimously oppoeed to any reduction
in the tariff upon Iron, believing that it
would be immediately disastrous to the
intonate of many of us, and eventually
Injurious to all.
llnoidrd, That the attest:llbn of capitol
to the, iron manufacture, caused by the
prosperous bondition of that business for
a few years put, has reduced the profits
'whiCil rarely reprefents reasonable Inter

the past year, must sill further affect the
market In the same direction, and thus
bring about gradually and without seri

Com Missioner deems the great dialdera

Besotted, Tnat any , 'breed tedtictien in
the price of iron by redtictibn in. the
tariff will neeessarily oompell those en.
gaged In the business to reduce the ex
pensed of manufacturing, and this redue
tion can only be effected by reducing the
*axes of Our laborers in our . furromes
and mines, thus Inaugurating- such di
rect conflict with labor as we have - ever
striven to avoid.
Rastdred, That we respectfully • but
earnestly request oar representative in
Congress, in view of the importance of
the subject, not' only to its, but to our
city, now the %bird in the State in Its

any reduction& the tariff on pig iron. •
It was agreed that the Secretary be
