others frivolous, but all will come from
hearts gunning and overflowing with
lover And yet, Christmas comes but
once a year ! Joy and gladness are but
the sunbeams that pierce the clouds of
sorrow and sadness, which overshadow
our pathway through life. Bright
days may be hailed with pleasure. but
dark ones must come with them. Death
borers about us constantly, and the
sweet sounds of the holiday beds may
fade away In the echo of rattling
earth tossed on the grim coffin lid by the
bends of the self same iteston, who rang
out so merrily the matin song. In view
of the transitions of life, the changes as
varying in humanity as In surrounding
nature, we can not feel that we should
enjoy the sunshine of the day, heedless
of the storm-cloud of temorrow,
and hence, In giving expressions to our
feelings of gratitude and affection in
Christmas gifts we should consider bow
to confer the greatest present and future
pleasure on Mows we lose.

The present of arlch set of furs, cheap,
though elegant; Is the best selection we
could make. Messrs. Wm. Fleming d•.
(.30., the great and extensive far dealers,
No. 139 Wood Street, have on band a

They have been the first to inaugurate
cheap prices for good goods. We advise
our readers to visit this great emporium
before purchasing elsewhere. Their goods
are superior and their pricee'are as low
as eau ho found anywhere in the country.
No better choice for a holiday present
could be made than a set of fora.

The commercial editor of the Chicago
Renting Joufnai gives a new method of
computing interest on any number of
dollars at six per cent, which so far as
It goes is simple and convenient. We
give the rule below from the Journal,
with additional rules for computing in
terest at eight and ten per cent., handed
us by a friend. These additions add
triple value to the rule, for the reason
that eight and ten per cent. are used
more at the present time than eix per cent.
ER PER CENT.—Multiply any given
number of dollars by the number of days
oflinterest desired, cut off the two right
haid figures and divide by six, the result
Is the true Interest (in dollars and cents)
on such sum for such number of
,days at
six per cent.
Enter PER czum—idultiply any given
amount by the number of days upon
which It is desired to ascertain the inter
est, and divide by for..hrita, and the re
sult will be the interest tor each amount
fur the time required at eight per cent.
MINE PER CENT.—Multiply the same
as above and divide by forty-the result
will be the interest at nine per cent.
Ten PER CENT.—Multiply the same as
above and divide by thirty.olz, and the
result will show the intereet at ten per
cent.
The Journal adds:
This rule Is so simple and so true ac-
cording to all business usages, that every
banker, broker, merchant or clerk should
post It up for reference. There being no
each thing as a frseticin In It, there Is
scarcely any liability to error or mistake."
By no other arithmetical process can
the desired Information be obtaihed by so
few figures.
