Taylor yesterday, to the effect that Chas.
13oreland, of Plum township, owed him
four dollars and eighty mote for farm
work, and when requested to pay, not
only refined-to do so, but whipped him
for making for it. Borelend was arrested,
Paid over , the wages and mats of prose
cotton, and was allowed to go free.
Fire Alarm.-Last, night about half
past eleven o'clock, an alarm of lire was
sounded from box 27, corner of Webster
and Grant streets. The alarm was or
caaloned by the burning of some cloth
ing hanging by the tire to dry in a house,
corner of Tunnel and Wylie streets, or.
cupled by a washerwoman. The excite
ment was all over before the eteamers
arrived, and their servicee were not re
quired.

was valued at one hundred and thirty
dollars.
Grist la now in jail awaiting trial on
another charge of larceny, a suit of
clothing having, it is alleged, been taken
by him from Cohen 'a store, Penn street.
Monday afternoon. The alderman lodg
ed a second commitment against him.
It is said that Grim was engaged in
another horse transaction in Indiana
township, for which be was arrested, but
afterwards escaped. The authorities at
that place have been notified of his app
prehension, and are expected to secure
him should he get through here.

Cro•e Ezamined.-1 know the defend-
ant, Mr. Smith; we have always been
personal friends: I never had any con
sensation with Mr. Smith prior to my
visit to Chicago: he said when he mune
to Harrisburg that he had left Chicago
on account of the plaintiff; he said he
was afraid she would shoot him; Mr.
Smith did not send me to Chicago; did
not tell plaintiff that I was a personal
friend of Mr. Smith, and would try aqd
settle the difficulty between them. She
said she was coming to PlUeburgh soon
and wanted me to meet her. I told hhr
that I 1,68°f - ten at Pittsburgh. I never
told the plaintiff that I had nerved •

mer at '65. Met her on the street. Had
no introcinction to her. I never made
soy promise of marriage to the plainti
after the 25th of Februrry, '67. 5 never,
at any time, agreed to marry her. On
Monday. in March, '67, Mrs. Johnson
went to Mr. Brown's office to Chttaight, to
settle a charge of breech of premise case,
which she had in Oita% I don't know
that she had brought a aunt against use
for • breech of promise, further than
what I saw in thetituiday papers. I paid
tier 1850 cash and gave her • note at three
months for $4OO. After tee papers bed
been fixed we left Mr. Brown's office.
Mrs. Johnson went to the bank and we
met on State street; wo walked on to her
house together and she invited me to
come in; I went in; she said she wanted
me to tall and see her hereafter as we
bad settled our difficulties, I should
continue my calls as usual; I wont home
that evening. ca'led the next evening et
her request; I staid there all night; Mete
was nothing said About marriage, I
think I went back there next day after,
there was nothing raid about marriage;
I never at any time talked of marriage
or promised to marry Mrs. Johnson after
paying the 111,250; I left Clifton° on the
sth of September, 1867; went to New
York city.
Defendant's counsel proposed to prove

violence made by plaintiff. (Objected

the 6th of May: She was Mopping at
that time at the St. James Hotel. She
came to the Eastern Exchange Hotel to
see me on the 4th of May, '69. Sent a
boy for me, and I went to the parlor and
knocked at the door, and Mrs. Johmon •
let me in. 1 asked her what brought
her there, and she said die came to sae
me. She wanted me to come to the St.
James Hotel with her, but I did not go
Went down next morning to the St.
James Hotel and asked the clerk if such
a Lady was stopping there; I asked him
to show me the pa .ffir and show the lady
in; he did so; I asked her what she
wanted with me; she began - to get angry.
and I started down stain, and she tried
to snatch my hat away from nie, and
said she would come out to East Liberty
again; I told her if she did I would have
her arrested by pollee; the next day
I wee arrested bLethe iheriff. there was
nothing said about therrlege at that
timer. l saw her prior to that time in J une.
'6B, at the St. James Hotel; she wanted
me to come to Chicago and live; there
was nothing said about the marriage;
she wanted me to come to Chicago, as
she was keeping an ice cream saloon and
did not like the buidneas, as she wax fre
quently insulted by persona coming in
and out; she wanted me to buy her a
cottage; I don't think Mrs. Johnson was
• engaged in any Mathews when I
firm became acquainted with her.
In May, 1869, she was doing nothing
for:a livelihood, at least she so stated to
