Gold was firmer to day under large
covering of short sales below 122, and
on account of purchases by the bull
clique. in stocks who are determined to
sustain the market until they nave sold
out, The administration. • although
anxious to see gold go lower feels
alarmed at the effect of the rapid de
cline produced on the general business
of the country. The country was never
better prepared for a further decline of
the gold premium teen at present;
everybody looked. for lower gold when
the large &stein emotes ofJanuary inter
ed would come on the market, and
business men as a general thug ' have
bought goods but sparingly. also, im
porters hays reduced their imports very
largely, whilst our articles of export
will seek a market even at a low tigers.
