The refusal of the Secretary of the
Treasury to accept bids for gold at Ina
than 122 per add. yesterday, has im
parted a firmer tone to the gold market,
and at ono time advanced tete premium,
to To-day the market opened
weak at 1.436, declined suddenly to
1213,'. and closed rather firm - at 122.
The greater steadiness of the market is
also partly due to a desire of covering
all gold that may be needed between
now and January next, for fear that
higher quotations would he made be
fore the close of the year, during the
time when new schemes will be offered
by the loft wing of Congress to reduce
the interest on our national debt, or
proposing new measures foi tending
or resuming spade payments. The
market ends a. further support In the
new neural speculative purchases by
parties or democratic proclivity, baling
the value of gold or the discount of
greenbacks on the market price of our
staple exports, whilst it le • well-known
fact, theori tinny correct and suppotred
by pet exeisrlenne, that these ar
ticles do not regulate the premium
on gold during the augteneion or
specie payment, but would well hold
good if the country's circulating medi
um was specie of its equivalent. In re
gard to the nonconfolity of the prices of

There is a general complaint about be

The most encouraging feature we have
to report is the resumption of navies.
Lion; millions of le.hols of coal, that
have been locked up bore for mouths,
will be started dowli the river within
the next forty eight hoar', and a large
amount of Pittaburgn manufactures
have already started end there Is a good
deal yet to follow. This, of course, will
tend to ease up money midterm, within
a week or two and when the occur., an
Improvement in business generally, can
reasonably evexpected.
All the railroads centering here are
doing a good business, haying about all
the freight they can handle, and the
Cocks of all kinds of grain, flour and
country produce are large, and ooneid
erbly In excess of the demand. Not
withstanding this, however, the arri
vals continue heavy, and nearly every
warehouse on Liberty street I. tilled.
