The place was a theatre, the com pany were actors and actresses, the at traction was advertised as a play, but there were few in that audience, capable of appreciatim; the language of the hu man heart—and who of mature the is not capable in some degree 7—who have beard, or are ever likely to know, out. aide of an individual experience, from which they moat all Pray earned:lp to be spared, a more forcible exposition of the sacred obligations of the married state. The story of Eva Lynne, an the novel ist presents it, le very properly regarded not only as sensational, but as formed with that heel degree of pernicious art which succeeds in glazing over a fatal error with an air of tempting j entitles lion, and In arranging the sympathetic Impellers of the unreflecting to hallow that error In the depth of suffering which socempanles its final catastrophe. Hero in is the one decielve objection to the work of the novelist. But here also is the triumph of the dramatist and the artist, who have both known how to elimlnatathe poison from thin story of mutual wrong, offering only those salient points which make the play of East Lynne a terribly 'eloquent lesson to 'thoughtless husbands and Melons wi vett Fair criticism will redeem Mien Weal. ern'a art from the very unjust impute. tioms to which her Pensonations in tills play have exposed her In nets few of the public journals Her style has cansple. 1 nous fruits, but these are made console ' biota by her own consummate merits I [ the general conduct of the argnmen . ' This is, Mier all, a simple story of a Illiaarortedttnion,--a husband who meet I [ well, but is cold in temperament, Mean [ sdble to the emotions of a pussionatel sensitive nature, and who obtusely per severes in disregarding the Just clams which entitle his wife to his complete confident* In all his relations with society; who persists in excluding her front any participation in the knowledge [ of a mystery which she as constantly be -1 holds him sharing with another woman personally attractive end a quondam rival of her own, • husband, In short, who daily and hourly forgets, In this way and in his stolid unsociability to his wife's evident mental dietress, that she, of all the women on earth, and concerning every earthly eonelderation, should ever be nearest and dearest to hie affectionate trust. And Abe, a giddy girl, a romantic woman, wlth,no adequate preparation for the responalbilltles of a wife, loving passionately, yet suffering trifles light its air to embitter her heart with a Jeal ous distrust of that husband's faith in pledging to her his undivided af fection, revealing the secret of her Wearable doubts to the false friend who plOl3 her ruin, irritated by her hus band's thoughtlessness, and the Shadowy seeming of a graver fault, into the irreparable disgrace of him and of her children, and her own irredeemable dishonor. The story culminates, very I naturally, in her own desertion by her betrayer, and very instinctively in the exhibition of her remorse. She seeks her former home, yearning for the chil drenwhom ahe bad deserted, Ands that herhusband, divorced from her, has given to them for their second mother the very semen whom she had fancied to be her rival, under the disguise of a governess is engaged to attend these [ children, and finally disclaims herself dying, at the bed aide of her dead child. [ The argument of the play Is very P,; fl ity In Menstruation, but its leesone all point one way. ho husband, no sweeten wit neat its presentation i•y. Mu Western, without coming !sit a purer and clearer perception. of connubial obligations. The danger of' any climb& or dimmest, the treachery of mere appearances, the need for an absolute and mincer° candor on each aide, the mischief which may result from either party withholding the fullest confidence from the other, the folly of • husband who soon forgets that as he hea been, so he should always be, his wife's most ardent lover, the fatal results of an unreasonable jealousy which takes ap pearances for facts, the ruin and despa ir which at last bring their hopeless wreck ' to an erring wife—there is nothing in all 1 this to condemn the play of East Lynne, but rather a world of teaching for mar ried thoughtlessness. Observations of Thanksgiving Day—Re. 'iglus Exercises—Lecture. The day appointed by oar Chief Mag istrate, and Governor, to be observed as one of thanjugivlng and prayer, wu duly observed by the citizens of Beaver. The places of business were closed, And peace and quietness reigned throughout the town. The Methodist Episcopal and Presbyterian congregations united in their thank-offeringa, repaired to the Presbyterian church, and listened to a deep and earnest sermon delivered by Rev. D. P. Lowery, from a text selected from a part of the Lsuth Psalm, viz: " Praise ye the Lord." He clearly showed forth not only the duty, but th e pleasure. there is in • grateful heart and how much we have to be thankful for as a nation, with whom war, but • abort time ago, was on the rampage. Butpeace now reigned. The national debt is being greatly reduced. The crops of our far mers have been good and have yielded abundantly, to appease the demand and appetite of man and beat. The speaker said, "dome say they have nothing to be thankful for. Who has kept them from their earliest existence to the Ku err hour? Who has fed and clothed them? kept them from danger, On and wickedness? Who has given them the wealth they porous ? Should the sir they, breathe be withdrawn:but for a mo ment, they would die. Their lives are hanging an brittle ttusads, which their Maker could snap asunder in a moment of time. The evening of the pleasant day was spent In listening to • lecture delivered In the Court House by Rev. James Boi ling-ahead. Tint Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means announces that he shad early prey the consideration of the new tax and tariff bills upon the House of Representatives, leaving the House to judge, rather than the Committee, whelk... er such legislation shall be pushed through this session. The bill to reduce into one act, and to amend the laws relating to Internal taxis, was nearly pertperfected at the last session, and la already pending. Its principal object is to codify WU one act the many Internal revenue 'laws, and to an away with the conflicting construc tion of the various sections. This bill will doubtless besome a law, but the fate of the tariff measure is a mere matter of conjecture. Not with the expectation of giving you any startling news, that I write this let. ter, for although Zanesville constantly enjoys a solid and healthy business, there is seldom anything exciting In and around the city. Yesterday the three Presbyterian min isters of this city concluded they would celebrate Thankagiving day by uniting in one Church (the Pint), and have a Union demonstration In kind like that to your city last week. The exercises lasted just an hour and one-hail. The singing wu participated In by all the congregation present, without the assistance of the organ or other musical instrument, and gave us back in this resoect a day of wor ship after the fashion of thirty years ago. The addresses were made by the Rev. A. Elingaburg and Rev. Win. M. Baker. RAILWAT MATTE WI. The people of Zanesville, business men especially, are waiting with anxiety the breaking ground in the building of the Branch Railroad, between the Pan handle road at Dresden and Zanesville. This little stretch of sixteen miles is all important to us; I will also say impor. hint to the Penna. Central, for the east ward bound freight from this city is not a small Item to even such a road as the Penns Central. I believe that road has spent more money on less Important branches, or than is necessary to reach I Just the trade of Zanesville. Largeahip merits of flour, live stock and grain are annually made from this point to the east. The coal which will Boon be opened up on the line of this branch and at this city will require immense facilitle, to transport the same further west. In this connection I may state that there is a movement being made to put down a coal shaft within the city, and .ight on the railroad track; an impetus Is given to this movement in the fact that coal has ad vanced here to 10 cents tier bushel.
