The Graveyard Question
A meeting of the lot bolder. of the
Eleventh Ward Methodist Uraveyard,
about which so much hae been eald and
written during the past year, was held at
the Second Ward School House, yester
day, Monday evening, Nov. 18th, 1869.
The meeting was organized by calling
Mr. Robert King to the chair. Mr. James
McKean officiating as Secretary.
The President, on taking the chair,
stated that the meeting bad teen called
for the purpose of hearing the report of
the Committee a pp ointed to negotiate
with the Oomminioners for a eampro
mice of the difficulty.
Capt. Andrew Miller, Chairman of the
committee, presented a verbal report,
setting forth the result of the Interview
with the commissioners. He said that
alone the last meeting of the lot owner.
the committee had an interview with
two ol the commitalotiera. The propo.
siticaus submitted to the lot owners from
the coma:meta:tern had been agreed
upon as the bards of a compromise. He
in company with one of the commtsaion.
era Lad visited the office of Mr. White,
attorney for the commireiorierns, for the
purpose of having the agreement put In
writing, and at the suggestion of Mr.
White the commissioner backed down
from. the agreement, so that the matter
now statidetpt was before the propo.i.
clod to compromise.
Mr. White mild he held that the re.
pitted lot owners had no title to the
ground, and teat they would find the
Supreme Court would sustain - Wm.
Toe commisaionera had auhatittid
several other propositions, bet they were
so mean that he had told them be would
not direr them to the meeting of lot
holders.
As the meeting desired to hear it, lee
eased one proposition, which wits ea fol.
lows: They propose that each lot owner
purchase a lot in some other burying
ground, and remove all their dead; that
the commbisioners would pay the actual
cost of moving the bodies, provided the
cost of any single lot did not come to
more than 1211; and after the dead are all
removed and the ground cleared ofh
then the oommlattionere would purchase
the lots from the owners at the original
mad price of 410 each. The prop osi tion
was in writing, and had been drawn up
by the same individual who procured the
passage of the act for the vacation of the
burial ground, and was like the sot, a
trap to c itch the unsuspecting.
The only worse now left for the lot
owners was to prosecute the matter to
the end. He had no doubts whatever of
the result, and if the lot owners were
successful they could fence in the
ground and use it as a burying ground,
and by replanting shrubbery restore it
to Its condition before it bad been dese
crated by the hands of the Commission
er..
Hr. Floyd thought it would be neces
eery to erect a watch house and place a
watchman in It if they desired to protect
t the auggeetion of Mr. Miller, the
Secretary read the opinion of the Court
to the application for a preliminary in
junction to restrain the Commissionere
from proceeding further with the work
of removing the bodies.
•
The report was received.
Mr. Floyd saki that he was glad to see
that the Committee was With him. He
had never agreed to a compromise with
the Commissioners. He had said from
the first that he would be satisfied with
nothing save the return of the bodies
that bad been removed by the
tooCommis
tdnere, and the restoration of the ground
as near what it formerly was as could
be done.
Mr. Floyd submitted the following:
'lieaolted.
Reaohed. That we earnestly request
.the Commissioner. of Liberty and Smith
field street station and the Centenary
Board to bring back the comes that they
have removed, and bury them as near
as possible in the grave they once paid
for, and place the grave mark. to the
sums: and we pledge ourselves to stand
an assessment of one thousand dollars to
defray the expenses of putting a fence
around the same, en that " Osbriel's
Bump" shall be the first to disturb
them.
The resolution was unanknonaly
adopted.
The Committee, on motion of Mr.
Floyd. were continued, and requested to
have the counsel apply to the Court for
the appointment of a commiaaloner or
oommisaioners to take charge of the
burying. ground until the matter was
definitely settled.
Tho meeting then adjourned.
