Mr. Leech, who died In that city on the
2Nth ult. Mr. Leech was almost an well
known, and hie death will be equally
lamented, here ea in Philadelphia. Our
personal acquaintance with Mr. Leech
began in the tenth year of his age, when
being sussoclated with his father In busi
ness, it was our wont to admire the
'promising boy and commend him to his
father as worthy of a careful and liberal
eduCatton. lie wag, however, early
withdrawn from school, and has had a
long and remarkably successful basil.

which occurred on Friday last, and be.
came generally known on Saturday,
sawed a deep feeling of sorrow and re
gret among his extensive circle of social
and business friends. It was known that
he was ill, but not that he was in danger,
for the fatal turn in his disease only took
places few days before his death. Few
men were more widely known„ for his
name_has been thoroughly Identified
With ommercial intercourse between
Philadelphia aed Pittsburgh for two
generations, and latterly It has been
quite as thoroughly identified with all
commercial traMc between the seaboard
cities of the North and Piet, and those of
' the Western States. William F. Leeds
was the son of David LealiaM, the pioneer
'of the heavy freighting line be
tween Philadelphia and Pittsburgh,
by means of the old State Canal
sod the Union Canal, 06 was for many
years engaged with his Dither, and there.
fore familliar from ttisboytiogri with the
business that .became the occupation of
hls life. Itrthe year 1847, he mine to
Philadelphia and established a large
transportation house on Third street,
above Chestnut, se one of the firm of
Harris & Leech. More recently he was
the similar partner in the firm of Leeds dr.
Co., Agents of the Pennylvanla Railroad
Company in tbe ea te nsr cltiea, and he
was the Treasurer of the Union and
Empire fast freight lines, of which be
was one of the originators and most ac
tive promoters. Being OMB actively and
extensively employed in the business of
' transportation, Mr. Leech became almost
universally known to the merchants and
manufacturers of the Eastern, Middle and
Western states, and he weans widely re.
spaded as he was ententdvely known.
Hp was a man of kindly nature and gen
erous dispoaillon ; one of that stamp of
men who are always ready to take any
trouble , and use every honorable effort
to do a service for a friend or any worthy
person who Stood In need of kindnees-
Re was • true Christian In that best sense
of the term, which includes doing good
to his fellow-men, tut he would have them
do good towards him. The decease of
such a man always brings with it the
additional regret that it Is • loss to the
community at large, as well as Z deep
affliction to the immediate family and
social circle. Mr. Leech was born in the
western part of Pennsylvania, in Decem
ber, Ilildoffid had not yet reached the
close of his fifty-first year.

Mr. Walter Scott, for a long time the
popular conductor on one of the atxtom•
mt.:ration trains on the Pittsburgh, Port
Wayne and Chicago Railway, was taken
ill several weeks since, but waverer's°
far as to be able to go about. On kviday
last he went out for a walk. andvess
seen to fall suddenly to the ground. Ele
was conveyed to his home, where he
grew worse until yesterday morning,
when, at five o'clock. he expired. He
will be widely and sincerely mourned.

him to all who came In contact with him
aud made personal friends of all who
knew him. lie was a young man who
made the world better for having lived
In It. Not an unkind thought from any
heart will follow him to hissgrave.

We regret to note the death of James
W. E.lllot Esq. of this city, who died
very suddenly, early yesterday morning,
having arrived at the ripe old age of
aeventreight years. Mr. Elliot bee
lived to Pittsburgh all his life, having
followed the business of nurseryman in
connection with the well known arm of
Elliot Bro et Burge.. but recently re
tired from sotive loudness owing to the
feeble state ants health. lie was • very
jovial man mid amiable in all his deal-

death. at mid-life. so unexpected, an
overwhelming bereavement of his fam
ily and • large circle of attached friend.,

woman, with scarcely any clothing upon
her, created considerable excitement in
the Third ward, Allegheny, by wander
ing through the streets, talking and
singing vociferously, and occasionally
varying her exercises by ringing door
bells, accosting pedestrians and math.

mental condition.
The attention of the police was at
length called to the wanderer Lod officer

aged about eighty-six years, the past
