()pews or Pirrentonor Cistern; / Moto DAY, November 1, 1869, t Th money market is actually as stringent as It baa ever been in this city, iiTtept on January and July battlement. The gradual shrinkage of values, the stricter eurveyillance of the national teaks since the last gold earner, and the general indispention to grant any credits except short terms, causes• general eon traction of the mercantile operations, and forces the banks to husband their availa ble funds beyond a mint heretofore con. aidered necemary. In addition to the contraction here comes in at this mo ment a speculative excitement to the oil Interests. which is the more surprising under a continued increase of produc tion, a falling off In the home consump tion, caused by the practice of greater economy, and a declining tendency of gold and exchange, to say nothing of the shrinkage in the values of all pro ducts. It appears that the bull elements of the oil interests have taken upon themselves the task of taking. all the oil offered and what is likely to be offered at tempting figure*, for the purpose of forcing an advance of the market. Oil being generally held in or shipped from Philadelphia, alth °ugh the bona fide owners reside In New Tart, the bulk of the article is held there and muse c§uently the money to carry, a large mock must remain in Philadelphia. The estimates made by reliable wiles give about one million dollars as the amount of money taken from Pitts. burgh on the October settlements to attest expiring contracts In Philadelphia. Such a vast sum of money must. natu rally restrict the disommtlog facilities t f those who relied on the banks sad pri vate money lenders, who are few In 'number compared with other cities of the mime sire. The certalnity. that this money and an additional sum will not mecum to Pittsburgh during the present month, will show a poor prospect for an easy money market for the balance of She year. •The kola market looks dull and no signs are visible that would point to wards any material rise. We now realize that those persistent hears in gold who mold down the market In August and Sep tember to 131% bad a very correct view of the condition of the financial situation, and among them we find the wealthiest, shrewdest and far seeing financiers of this country and the representatives of foreigh houses. Had It not been for the rascality of a few adventurers like Flak, Gould and othersgold would now sell be low 125, the tame maims for a decline that existed then we not removed pa. On the contrary they are Increased by the light short Interest which is alwsysthe princi pal element for a rise. It does not Sallow, Mowever, that gold moat gradually go .down. Sharp and quick rallies most be expected, of which only those can profit wbo are at headquarters. The policy of the Government must be to Oat at an elevation of oar greenbacks, In order to sustain and improve Government credit. since the theory of promoting it by ad . 'airing Our funded debt ham only coat the National Treasury about ten million 4.;lers, and has increased the debt that mac.' indirectly, without acoom pliahing the o, 'eot it was Intended for. Government tio.ultles are dull and lower In sympathy wit: gold, and from the large offerings of bends by large holders, banks and savings institutions and an indisposition to buy, whether for .speculation or export. The excitement and depression were increased by rumor. of several injunc. florin on the Vanderbilt consolidation, these rumors, however, could not be au thenticated, Lug nevertheless tended to .alto the unsettledfeeling. It has been intimated foe some day. past that oil would rule higher in No. vernber and possibly Decembers than it did In Clinbaber, and If ouch be the pro gramme, this month opens up very au spiciously for its consumation. It was expected by many that after - the October deliveries had been settled. that the man ket would react and prices deeline ma. terially, but thus far these expectation. have not been realised. For futures, the market to-day seemed even stronger than it was on Saturday, and notwith• standing there was, we understand, cm, siderable inquiry at an advance over the cloning quotations of hut week, yet there appeared to be very few sellers. The supply on sale to-day was the largest of the season, about 1,350 head,/ and, an might be es lerted, lu the alo sonvo of any eastern demand, the mar. kat was pronounced a very hard one by drovers, and compared with last week, all grades are lower, though the biggest decline was In the lower classes, of which the offerings mainly ronalated. There was, it la true, a large number of lag steer. and stage, but, they were rough and presented a lean appearance , not the kind wanted by good butchers, and consequently, were hard to sell. Prime fat steers, although about 20(425 eta. per rat lower, were, nevertheless, good demand and sold at relatively bet" ter prices than the commoner grades, 7,i@,7!4, with some fancy at V,7547,81.1. Stock cattle sold at 4@5 eta The advice. from the east for the last week or two have been rather unfavora ble, and the depression there Ix being felt pretty sensitively here. Shippers will not buy unless material oonosesdoes are made, and dealers who have been baying in the west recently will doubt less loose money, as cattle have bean higher, relatively, In the west, than here or to the anat. The general impression, so far as our knowledge extends, la that prices are yet too much Inflated, and that the bottom has not yet been reached The fact that pasture has been remarka bly gond and abundant tide last summer and fall. has had a tendency to keep cat tle back; but now as winter has set In, It is probable that the number put upon the market will be large. • Fred. !tells:eine bought 12 head of very nice, fat, einnoth steers, the best In mar ket. for which he paid 17,80.
