LONDON, 00tObet 12.-7. the Tined has
an editorial to-day , on financial matters
in the United !States. The writer says
there may be circumstances in the finan
cial position of the United States author
izing so glaring a departnre from the
sound rules of public economy; but it is
difficult to deny that a mere struggle of
gamblers, by an act of the Government,
is Magnified into an event of national
importance. If Mr. Sontwell had perse
vered, more money would have changed
hands--more fortunes made or mered—
other brokers zone mad, absconded
or committed stilidcs; the threat against
Fisk might 'have been executed. It is
not easy to decide whether this .will be
for good or evil. It might have allayed
this peculiar, fever, sobered gambling
madness, weaned some helpless dupes
from the Eichange, rid some arrant
rogues. The Acuson will not be altogether
lost; but had the lesson gone to the end,
it mighthave been more impressiye and
its precepts enhanced by a higher coat.
