FINANCE AND TRADE,
By Teligrouh to the Pittsburgh Guezte.l
Judge Cardozo this morning appointed
C. N. Jordan. Cashier of Third National
Bank, Receiver of the Gold Exchange
Bank, to the place of Augustus L.
Brown, resigned. Power was given to
the new Receiver to adjust all claims
upon or in favor of the Bank, Including,
of course, the gold business of Friday,
September 24th. It is believed the
affairs of the bank , will be satis
factorily adjusted during the present
week. The monetary'of Walt street was
slightly relieved this afternoon by a
rumor on stock exchange that there was
a panic in Chicago with a fall in wheat
to 90; and subsequent recovery to 95c.
As the public and private telegrams did
not mention anything about the panic, it
was discredited. The stock exchange is be
ing unfavorably affected by the depres
won in the grain trade at the West, and
the decreased earnings of the western
roads was responded to to day by a
marked decline in leading shares. At
the one o'clock Board the suspension of
the stock firm of Fitzhugh and Jenkins
was announced. The house was not a
large one but had a high reputation.

hio,IDAY, October 11, 1869. I
The advires from Chicago to-day, w ere'
not palatable to parties carrying - large .
stocks of grain, and who bought largely
sometime ago, for friture delivery. • No.
2 Wheat is quoted down. to 961,1; last.
month it sold at $1.,35 and even $1,40 for
seller October; the seller, Recording to
present indications,' will realize a very
handsome margin; while, on the other
band, the buyer, will have a very ugly
differencelo settle, one that. will. &like.
some of them feel very uncomfortable.
Some of the parties who engage inthis
particular branch of. business, "selling
short" and "going long," adopt as their
policy, "heads I win and tails you
lose;' if the markets turn out out in
their favor It is all right—but if it goes
against them, they fail, or if
other
words, go up, and this will no doubt be
the result in many instances, in the case
we have lust alluded to. Sixty days
ago, the impression was created, nearly
all over the country, that the excessive
and continued rains had ruined' the
crops, that the yield would be below an
average and that prices were destined to
rule higher. How much truth there was
in these reports, has been already fully
developed, and those who invested their
money and credit on the basis of short
crops, have erethis discoiered their mist
take.
