Amusements.
OPERA HOUSE.—Mr. arid Mrs. Albaugh
closed a highly successful engagement at
the Opera House on Saturday evening.
They both demonstrated pretty clearly
how some "stars" can draw the pay,
while superior actors in the stock com
pany contribute all that make the plays
interesting. Mr. Albaugh, in Richard
the lIId, was as pretentious a piece of
unnatural and impotent acting as we
have ever witnessed, and had not the
Richmond sustained himself much better
we should sympathize with Shakespeare
in the cruel manner be was murdered.
Let Mr. and Mrs. Albaugh alone next
season, good Mr. Canning, and rest amis.
fled with the thought that you have
done a good thing by the public in
keeping the stage clear of stars
of a magnitude which would
fail to do credit to the milky way of the
dramatic profession. This evening Mr.
Joseph Proctor commences an engage
ment of six nights at the Opera House,
when "Nick of the Woods" will be pre
sented. Mr. Proctor is so well known
and highly appreciated in this city that
it is useless for us to say a word in his
favor.
PITTSBURG'S THEATRE.—This cosy and
comfortable place of amusement cont:n
ues to furnish its patrons with excellent
entertainments, and the public fully ap
preciating that fact, give it a liberal pat
ronage. In addition to the long list of
brilliant stars of last week, several new
attractions are announced for the present
week. Manager Williams knows how to
please the public.
ACADEMY OF Wm.—Allen, Pettengill
it Co.'s Sensation MinStrels will com
mence an engagement of four nights
only, at the Academy of Music, Thurs
day, the 13th inst. The troupe is said to
be one of the best now traveling, and
they will doubtless draw full houses.
Pastkr/L-RosA.:---Monday evening, the
18th inst., the Parepa-Rosa Opera Troupe
will commonce a brilliant season of Eng
lish opera, of six nights only, at the.
Academy of Milsic. The sale of season
tickets will take place on Wednesday at
Kleber di Bro.'s Music Store. 122 Wood
street, from 9a. la. to 12 SI. After that
hour commences the sale for any one or
more nights.

Habeas Corpus.
An I nterestlng case was brought pp
before the Court of Common Pleas, Sat
urday, Judge Sterrett presiding on a
habeas col pew. The writ was issued upon
the application of John Maguire, of
Blair county, who asks to obtain posses
sfon of a little girl, Jane Stanley by
name, aged about seven years. The
child was the daughter of Michael Stan
ley, deceased, and is pow in the posses
sion of Mrs. M. Kennedy. a resident of
Allegheny. but formerly of Cambria
county. The father was killed while in
the army. the msther has married a sec
and time. The mother desired to have the
child, which has bserr in the • pos
session of Mrs. Kennedy for six
years, placed under the charge of her
brother, and stated that the child was
taken from her by her husband when it
was not more than four or five months
old. She further stated that she bad
never seen it but once since that time.
For the respondent, testimony was ad
duced to show that the mother was dis
sipated, and the child waa deserted by
her when a mere babe. It was further
shown that it had been well cared for.
and that Mrs. K. had been appointed
guardian by the Cambria County Court.
Ur. Stanley also produced a certificate of
guardianship issued by the Blair County
Court.
After hearing the testimony, upon sr
meet of counsel the case was put on the
argnment list, and will be argued Satur
