PETROLEUDI MARKET•
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAAbviE,
FRIDAY, October, 8, 1869.
The oil -market opened up a little
stronger this morning under the in
fluence of the advance reported at
Antwerp, but. in the afternoon the feel
ing.l was easier, and dullness and sta a
tion were the order of the day. Th re
are many causes assigned for the re
settled and very unsatisfactory condi-
tion of the trade; but the most impor—
tant one, so far at least as Pittsburgh is
concerned, is the inequality in the
prices of crude and refined, the former
continuing, as it has been nearly all the
year, much higher, relatively, than the
latter; this is the great clog to the mania-
factnring business, and so long as the ;
manufacturing business is clogged and
crppled, all the other various interests
connected directly or indirectly with it, t
must languish and stiffer. Refiners tell '
us, and they ought, to know, that, there
is no money whatever in the business,
• -
in the present condition of affairs, and,
-what is worse still, there are no Indica
tions apparent of any immediate im•
provernent.
Discouraged and we might say dis
gusted with the condition of affairs in
the East, refiners'are beginning to turn
their attention south and westward, and
within the past ten days, there has been
nearly, perhaps altogether, as much oil
shipped west and south as there has
been shipped east. We are cognizant
of 2,500 bbls having been shipped to ,go
to New Orleans: 2,000 to Mobile, Ala
bama; 1,000 to Galveston, Texas, while
to Cincinnati, Louisville and 8; Louis,
shipments are of very common occur
rence. If our western railroads would
reduce the freight on oil somewhat, our
trade with the. west would be much
arger, and otir shipments would be
double, perhaps trade what they now
are. .
