to settle th it contracts, connected with '
the gold s culation of Friday. Sept. 24,
on the ba .of 135, the difference to be
i i
paid 50 pe cent. in cash, and 50 per cent";:'
in ten de_ s, or on resumption of pay
ment by the Gold Bank, has been as
cepted -by the dealers whose contracts
with the firm cover six millions. The
entire outstanding contracts with this
firm on tbat day's business are $9,000,000.
The Lake Shore directors are still in
session.
Money is easy at 6@7 per cent. on.call.
One bank received $150,000 in currency
from Chicago. Commercial bills are rather

and closed at 131. Carrying rates 7@B
per cent. to fiat. The rise seems to be
due rather to the small offerings than to
any unusual demand.

OFFICE OF PrrrSBIIRGE GAZETTE,
WEDNESDAY, October 6, 1869.
We adverted briefly yesterday to the
difficulty Pittsburgh is laboring under,
in consequence of being treated unfairly
by some of our railroads, and . that an
effort is now being made to have this
difficulty, if possible, removed. At one
time, there was quite an active business
carried on between Pittsburgh and Phil
adelphia, shipments of dour, grain, feed,
and many other articles, being, of almost
daily occurence, but for the last fifteen
months!there has not been shipped from
here to that or any other poi a in -the
east, over twenty cars of grain. It is
alleged, and there is no reason to doubt
it, that many small towns in Ohio and
Indiana, on the lines of railroads center
ing here, ship more grain east in a week,
than Pittsburgh does in months. Colum
bus has long boasted that shipments can
be made from there to Philadelphia,
much cheaper, relatively, than can be
made from Pittsburgh. To illustrate: it
costs the Pittsburgh dealer 21% cents .
per 100 lbs from Wooster to this place;
and from here to Philadelphia, 30 cts.,
making 513 cts; while the through rate
from Wooster to Philadelphia is only
37% cts. per 100 lbs, showing a difference
of 14 cts. against Pittsburgh and in favor
of the Wooster shipper; and what is true
of Wooster will apply to a large number
of small towns on the line of roads cen
tering here.
Our grain dealers in stating their
grievances to the proper - authorities of
the Penna. Central Company, ask for
nothing that is unfair and state nothing
but what is true, and their request is so
fair antlreasonable, and withal so im
portant, that all they seek will no doubt
be granted. There is no good reason
why there should not be a thriving ship.
ping_ business carried on between Pitts
burgh and Philadelphia, and other points
in the east, and all that is required to
bring this about is to place Pittsburgh
on an equality with other points in the
west; it is not right nor just that Pitts
burgh should be 'compelled •to pay
within a fraction as much, to the Sea
board, as Chicago, Cincinnati or St.
Louis, over the same roads, more than•
double the distance.
