ESDAY.October ft, 1869. t
Business generally is quiet though
about as active as can be expected un- .
der existing circustances. rade is
languishing here to some extent, in con
sequence of the discrimination made
against us some of the leading rail
road companies, and until a remedy is
applied no improvement can reasonably
be expected. What Pittsburgh mer
chants want is -an equitable and fair
tariff of freights, so as to be enabled to
ship from here to the seaboard, and to
this they are certainly entitlel. If
a grain dealer cannot sell here, it s very
important for him to have au outlet; at
present rates he cannot ship—he 'as no
outlet, but is obliged zo hold in store
or elevator until such time as he
c an sell
to the local trade., Now it is well
known that the local trade oil Pitts
burgh does not amount to muc l h, and
that there is not sufficient scoPo here to
afford our dealers any chance 'to ex
tend their business. It is `asserted, and -
it is no doubt' true, that it cost nearly as
much to bring a car load of grain from
Newark-, or Columbus to l'iLtsburgh, as
it does from Cincinnati, notwithstand
iug it is only about half the distance. It
is also alleged,•and we have no reason
to doubt it, that points west of here can .
ship through to Philadelphia, Balti
more and NeW York much cheaper,
relatively, than can be shipped from
Pittsburgh. Now we are aware that
some of these companies are obliged to
give low through rates, in consequence of
competing lines, but at tke same time
ibis bears very unfairly on .Pittsburgh.
Nor is this confined to the grain busi
ness alone; all *blanches ot trade are
l ang uishing more or Jess, from this.
very cause, and it is, earnestly hoped
that the efforts that are now being
made to remedy this matter will be
successful. :
