The unsettled condition of the gold
and stock market has temporarily
checked mercantile transactions all over
the country. Values of every kind are
affected by the average decline of gold
ab out six per cent., and a new basis
has to be assumed, should gold perma
nently stay below 130, for which there is
a good prospect 'now. For commercial
reasons, the premium should decline
during the present month to about 125,
although the market is at present sus
tained_at about 130,:partly on account of
an easy money market, but more so for
preventing a too rapid decline in the
market value of stock, in order to ob
tain a price for them by money lenders,
with whom they are pledged on mar
gins, for the adyance of money to
protect themselves from loss. Wall
street and its vicinity assumed a quieter
aspect at the close of the past week,
and nearly all the gold contracts are
satisfactorily settled. After a careful
investigation of the whole transactions
of the "bull" clique it turns out, that
they were heavy losers at the end of set
tlement because of the large decline in
stocks, of which they were the largest
holders on small margins. It also came
to light that after all, the smaller firms
lost comparatively less
,than the larger
houses, who depended on their immense
resources in weathering the storm. An
other question, no less important than
the gold premium, is the future market
value of bonds; and it 'remains to
be seen how far they will be
effected by the decline in gold. The
mere fact of this decline should improve
their value even in currency, provided,
Europe was a buyer of them at present.
This not being the case, and a hardening
tendency of the money‘market evident,
by the more rapid movement of western
'produce to a market while prices are yet
fair—it may fairly be presumed that
bonds will andnally approach' the:.erfees
- of kik season. Thts reasoning may - be
supported by,the early_withdrawal of the
Government from the market as I:pur
chafer. Id feat; the Gev.ernment only
sustained the market Igloo by purchases
at high rates; and generally above the
average market quotation. .
In stocks the market did not reach,
with that activity usual to a heavy de
cline, for fear of a stringent money mar.
ket; but a large share of the stocks held
by Wall street has been transferred to
private investors from all over the conn
tryLand any further decline would bring
in hosts of country purchasers lat low'
rates and for permanent investment.
In our local market the banks and
bankers are supplying their friendfiwith
all the money required at reasonable
rates, but outsiders tind it difficult to ob
tain motley under 12 per cant.

REVIEW FOR THE WEEK%
The oil market was moderatively ac
tive during the first two or three days
of the' week, but since then it has b i een
very quiet; and the sales unusually
light. On Wednesday there seemed to
be quite a panic in refined. spot or Sep
tember, selling down to 303.,:@303; on
Thursday and Friday, however, the
feeling was stronger, prices improved
considerably, though as already noted,
there was but little done. To-day the
market was again exceedingly quiet,
though compared with yesterday, priCes
were unchanged.
Receipts crude this week, 17,300 bbls;
last week, 19,502; January Ist to date,
644,749; same time last year, 835,417; Ex
ports refined this week, 16,093;" last
week,116,328; January Ist to date, 469,544;
same time last year, 621,053. Sales this
week, 45,500; last week, 70;000.
CRUDE.
But a single sale reported 2,000 spot at
143;, and seller all the month may be

spot at 31%, but, apparently, no sellers
below 32; October to December, quoted
at 32%©3235. There has been consider
able oil sold to go south and west du
ring the week, and - the :shipments both
by rail and river, particularly by river,
have been large.
