better; that there will be an' improve
ment within the next thirty days, is
generally expected, and hopes of a good
fall and winter trade are' entertained.
It looks now as though there would not
be - much 'chance for spectilation, and
those who want and eXpect to make
money, will nave to do It in the old
fashioned way, by doing legitimate boat
men; money matters are working very
close, and the banks here are hot die:

APPLES—The market" is completely
glutted, and with only a- moderate de-

BUTT.ER—AIio is very, dull, with a •
supply largely in excess of the demand,
and prices are drooping; sales of prime
to choice at 28@30.
CRANBERRIES—SaIes of prime east
ern cultivated at $12®13 per bbl.
CHEESE—Is quiet and unchanged,
ranging from 14 to 16 - cents, as to
quality.
CARBON. OlL—Quiet and unchanged,
may be quoted at 24 for round lots, and
306'31 in a retail way.
EGGS—DuII but unchanged, sales
at 2. I
FEATHERS—DuII; quoted at 80®85
cents to tbe trade, and the usual advance
for small lots in store.
FLOUR—The market Is quiet and
dull, and devold . of anything new or im
portant. We continue to quote `western
flours at 0,5015.6,75 for good, and • s74g
7,25 for choice.
GRAIN—The mills are receiving con
siderable wheat but dealets, in conse
quence of there being little; or no mar
gin, are receiving very little, we can re
port small sales of prime Red at $1,30,
but a round lot might bring more. Oats
firm but unchanged; wiles on wharf and
track u at 53©55, and in store at 56©58.
Rye is In demand at $l,lO. for Western
and $1,12 for prime State. Barley—none
offering; $1,25 is .sllll regarded as the
standard price, though there has been
some few sales at $1,30. Corn Is quiet
and uncharged-98®51,00 for prime yel
low.
GROCERIES--The advance in gold
has materially;effected both sugars and
coffees, and the market is considerably
excited and prices higher, and as nearly
lways is the case, when prices are ad
ancing,•the demigod is more active, and
holders are less anilous to realize. It
net probable, however, that the ad
ance in gold will be maintained for any
nsiderable length of time, and in case
t goes back, sugars - and coffees will
doubtless follow — throne will go with
