Tn ESDKT, Sept. ,1.
The stringency In the money marker
continues unabated, forcing down bonds,
stocks, and even geld had to yield
under its Influence; yet the shipments
of currency west and south are rather
meager for want of small denominations
of currency. If the present state of
finance in Wall street is only it foretaste
of what is to be, how much more \Till
values decline when national causes are
combined with artificial measures, to
withdraw the circulating medium
resenting money.
Gold opened strong at 137%®137%,
was steady under clique_ manipulations,
and finally settled down to 137.- in
sympathy with the general declineever, in
Wall street. The' cliques, how
have bought again a large amount Of
gold, preparatory to a further rise, and
some of the boldest operators already
talk of a premium high in the forties.
It is, however, supposed that the Secre
tary of the Treasury can not prevent
the rise of gold much above present quo
tations, as the effect on trade would be
most disastrous, and natnrally must
curtail the receipts from internal taxes
for the coming year.
I Government bonds are dull l and sell
at about as low a point as two week ago,
with little inquiry for bonds for in
vestment.
Stocks -have been dull, and closed
with a general decline under large sales
In anticipation of a break in prices to-
morrow.
In our local stocks there is likewise an
indisposition to buy, and some of the
City bonds, moat anxiously inquired fo e
r
a week or two ago, are now offered
large amounts at , concessions,
Money is still comparatively easy
here.

market closed lower, with an increased
pressure to sell, the decline being most
marked on New York Central, North
western, Rock Island and Lake Shore;

and rallied from the lowest point
of the day, /the reports of the early

TUESDAY, Sept. 21, 1869.
.The oil market was again quiet to-day,
and while there was a fair amount of

the feeling is not as unsettled and ex
cited as it was at the close of lastes have
week.
