OPTIOZ or PiTranusiali GAZEITI,
MONDAY, Sept. 20, 1869.
The Government bond market was
steady and strong today on higher
quotations:of gold, and easier. Money
transactions, however, are limited.
So long as gold keeps at present quo
tations there is little desire to sell Gov
ernments by permanent investors. Lower
gold quotations, however, would , tend to
press bonds on the market to make
room for the securities of railroad,
bridge, canal and munlncipal improve
ments. Of the latter class, a large
amount has bean offered recently and
found favor with the, piablic, more on ac-
Count of
_their •chee.pness, when com
pared with Government securities, and
and their gteater productions.
Gold opened stronr at 137 early in the
morning on account of the warlike
rumors spread, and sold up to 137%,
from which point it receded to 137%,
closing at 1371.4. If it was not for the
tight money market gold would sell at
much higher quotations, but the high
rates for carrying gold prevents large
purchases being made Rith a view of a
good profit.
Stocks,have slightly improved, but do
not show much strength, and are apt'to
decline still further.
In our local securities there is a bull
at present. Allegheny Valley bonds are
offered at 85, Steubenville and Indiana
at 75, Penbsylvania Railroad stocks 56%,
Birmingham gess at 28, East Birming
ham 8 per cent. bonds, about 90, City
fives about 75, fours 62, St. Clair street
bridge 48 to 51.
Money in demand, and business im
proving.

Mexriar, Sept. 20, 1869.
CATTLE.
That the market tp•day, was a hard
one on owners of cattle, we.-.pretty gen
erally conceded, and all gra.:...)-with the
exception of the very best, rule -om a
iAw4 lower, compared with y A arW....
Commonish cattle were very, abandant,
ever pen a bout the yards had,
and y
buyers of this kind of stook no
difficulty in getting all they wanted at the
reduction above noted. Extra fat steers,
such as our best butchers are accustomed
to killing, sold up pretty well to last
weekl e s prices, 7 1 4®7;4, though the
great, proportion of the sales were under -
seven eta., and we doubt whether the
average price would exceed 5;4 cts., as
there were, as will be seen by reference
to our drovenotes, a large number sold
at from 3@4, and 414.
The offerings were unusually large to
day, reaching 1,150 head, and the sup
ply being considerably in excess of the
demand, quite a number were left over
unsold. Of those on sale 36 cars
were from the west, as follows: Chicago,
8 cars; Crestline, 7; Manstield, 4; Cincin
nati, 3; Forrest. 1; Marion, 1; Degraff, 1;
Ada, 1; Lima, 2; Beilair, 2; Orrville, 1.
The balance of the cattle on sale were
driven in from adjoining .counties, and
the number was large.
