Stocks have been feverish and unset
tled during most of the day, and many
weak holders have been forced to sell,
their margins having been wiped out.
No failures have. been announced, how
ever, though it is rumored one or two
houses have made private settlements.
In the afternoon the market was active
and excited with a sharp upward turn,
New York Central rising from 190% to
204, and Pueblo Mail from 05% to 72.
The advance on the balance of the list
was less marked. The movements of
the general market this afternoon seem
to justify the report of yesterday thata
party was forming to give the market an
Upward turn. At the close prices were
a little.off from the highest and the mar
ket unsettled.

Tho oil market has been exceedingly
feverish for two or three days past, and
on Wednesday and Thursday the sales
were unusually large. Yesterday and to
day, however, notwithstanding tho feel
ing was very sensitive, the market was
weak, and compared with the two days
preceding, prices were lower. At a de—
cline of .aboat,a quartetithajlarket
reared to gte tirm, to -day; whlch ,Mayzhe
attributed in part. to thmfact. that -Ant"-
warp has still further advanced, being
quoted up to 57M.
We want to say a word or two more in
regard to the complaints raised on Fri
day in reference to the shipments. As
noted yesterday, we were charged by
certain parties with reporting more
than was actually shipped, and to sub
stantiate the charge, several gentleman,
engaged in the trade, it is said, made a
careltil examination at the office of the
Alleeheny Valley Railroad Company,
and detected several important errors.
Now we do not dispute but what these
gentlemen may have honestly believed
they were right in so stating, but •
we are satisfied that facts and figures
will not bear them out in their assertions.
In order to make ourselves doubly sure,
we went over the manifests again-to-day
in company with a reliable and respon
sible dealer, whose feelings in regard to
the market are in sympathy with theirs,
and the shipments on the days complain
ed of, as well as during the entire week,
were just exactly whit we made them,
not an error of a single barrel. or case.
the only error, if such it can be called,.
was in reporting two days shipments in
one, and, as noted, yesterday, we pro
pose hereafter when this occurs to so
state at the time. Now we know that
it is the desire of the trade at large to
have a fair and square report in regard
to the shipments. as well as everything
else, and this is what wo
have endeavored to give, but it does
seem to us that there are acme per Sons
engaged in the business who are en
tirely too suspicious, who imagine that
reporters aro very slippery and are
bought and sold like oil, benzine, or
any uther commodity of a slippery and
dangerous character. As we stated yester
day, we are always willing to make cor
rections when satisfied that we are
wrong; but would it not be wise for
parties who aro suspicious that there is
something wrong, to investigate more
careftilly and not to roadie charges until
satisfied they can -nd by thew ? •
Just here we take occasion to say that
we are as independent in the nommen
cial department of the G,UETTE, as

all the others, and recogniza neither
clique nor faction in making out our re
ports, only aiming to .be, fur and impar
tial, faithful and correct in all our
figures and statements. If the truth,
hen told, should happen to damage
pecuniarily operators by influencing
the market, -we should not to held re
sponsible, as mar duty is to the entire
cfanmuntry, ignoring, all discrimination
in favoi of or against any. set or clique
