The "bear" campaign on the stock ex change made further havoc with values today, and was the, great feature of Wall street. The speculative securities were pressed for sale with much confidence by the “bears" during the morning, and later in the day the "bulls" became frightened, when stocks were thrown overboard almost without regard to prices. The feeling during the fillet noon was gloomy, and for a time the market was bordering on a panic. The shrink age in values has been enormous, and many stocks touched the lowest point for years past. A report is freely circu lated that ,thei Secretary of the Treasiky will yield to the pressure for a change in his policy. Dispatches from Wash ington say the specie statement made by the New York City banks on the Bth instant shows the gold coin to be about $2,350,000, gold certificates $10,250,000, and gold bars $40,000; a total, including checks and coupons, of $13,250,000. Many rumors are current in re gard to purposes of leading spec ulators who have been prominent in effecting the decline. One of these is that a meeting was held to-day to organ ize for an upward - , turn, and that .they have this afternoon been buying. On the other hand it is vaguely rumored that important failures will occur. Money market more active and rates plump 7 per cent. on call. There is a large demand for small currency from the interior but it is nest to impossible to supply It even at a premium on bills of one, two, five and ten dollars. Discounts are very dial and the beat paper only passes-at very high rates; Sterling ,nominal at 7%08 per cent. Gold opened at 136%, touched 136%, and closed at 13635. There appeared to-he more excitement to-day in regard to exports 'of , oil ;east ward than anything else, and .but litlie else, for the tigiqb, eing, was thought of or talked about: 'lt is claimed by some parties that the shipments repprted in this paper.tifiesteldity were not eorrect, that they were entiroly, too large, and it . was insinuated in some- quarters, that the, rpporter _had intentionally, made tha OMPErtents. lath! u larger ,than ,they were hi reality. That there was one error, and only one, we concede; the shipment!) sratiffor two. daytr instead of one, and it should have been so stated, ,It occasionally. occurs, that the agent at the SI ta btoii• of the Vtillay Road, whose duty it is to forward to the office of that CloßPßasiiiaare a aialaa4catpdailyorlall , tie refirVitil khiPte4Al , 944% OUtol,310; linable or n send s aid report .d the fc:4:74 , Mbp miltpstetr ban two (Ur, klicadtMetirfe been footed up and published as one re port, and the casual observer would be led from this to believe that it was one instead of two days shipments. This we acknowledge i wrong, and. kereafter when two days shipments are re ceived at one time we shall so state. But, we .undestand that some parties take exception I to-the report, even ad miting two days shipments. Instead of one, and allege that the actual ship. mends were not as large as reported. To post ourselves in regard to the mat ter, we took the trouble to-day to go over the same ground again, and the footings were the same—no more and 'no less. We copied from manifests dated September 14th and 15th, and if these gentlemen who are so much interested in the matter will take the trouble to examin, these manifests they will find, that we are right; these two manifest call for as much oil as was report-1 ed in the GAZRETTE of yesterday. It was also complained that the names of the shippers were not given. This is very easily explained. 'fie manifests did not contain the names of the ship pore, nor was there any one about the depot who could furnish the names, and, .as a matter of course, we were obliged to omit them. The press has no interest in these shipments farther than to report them correctly; errors may have - occurred, we do not claim to be infalible, but we are very sure that they were not intentional, and further than that, we are always willing and ready to make oorrections, when convinced we are wrong. The GAZETTE is not in the interest of any clique or faction; it makes no difference to us whether the ship ments are 1,000 or 10,000 bbls tier day, or whetherrefined is up or down. , CRUDE Market a shade lower with little or nothing done. Sale of 1,000 bbls spot at 14%; 1,000 seller October at 143.1; and 3 cars on board. cars at Parker's Landing at 55,50. Yesterday spot oil sold at 15 and was held firmly at that figure, show ing a decline of a quarter of a cent. MC= Not a single sale reported; market dull and prices are nominally lower. Septem ber, last half, quoted at 32%; October at 3234@32,( 4 ; and lines from September or Octobor to December ,32%@32%.
