FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFIVS: OF PITTSBORCM GA.ZETTB,
. WEDNESDAY, Sept. 15, 1869. {,
A strong effort was made again to
day by the gold operators to run'up the
premium, and the price was run tip to
136, closing at 1.36!.,. The parties who
have the controliug interest in the gol4
room, are also the principal operators
in the Michigan Southern, . Ohio and
Mississippi, l and Cleveland and Pitts
burgh, and the Erie railroad, and by
their sales of Erie at an advance over
10 per cent. are enabled to put their own
figures on gold; the mercantile com
munity, however, is awaiting lower
prices before purchasing exchange for
remittance.
Government bonds were stronger and
firmer to-day, sympathizing with the
advance in gold, the market, however,
is not strong, and no speculative inter
est for a rise is manifested. It is confi
dently expected that just as soon as the
Government will cease buying bonds,
lower qqotation, are expected , with cer
tainty .
Stocks are dull and lower this even-

The downward course of Pacific Mail
shares for ;some time past attracts much
toattentio , n, and the decline to-day
72% which affected the whole
stook list unfavorably, - was the
topic of general discussion. It is
stated a loan was negotiated some
time past with a foreign bank in gold on
Pacific Mail stook, equal to abont $3,500,-
000-in currency, and, that this loan falls
due on the 22d inst. and will not be re
newed. It is also reported that the bulk
of capital stock is concentrated
in a few hands, from 50,000 to 70,000
shires being held by two firms. The
price touched today is the lowest
reached since 1881, when it sold at 50 per
cent in gold. There have been some
large sales of long stock lately;•which
in
connection with the gossip.noticed above,
have completely demoralized the street
on Pacific Mail speculation, and in faot
on stock market generally.

that attempts will be made to put nj3 the
price to-morrow, in connection with the

The market thus far this week h 3
been rather strong, which may be attri
bitted to a diminished supply, thong
prices, when the quality of cattle i
taken into consideration, are unchanged
Shippers generally argued that price
should have been lower, and that the ease
ern market this week had been anythin
but satisfactory, but with a light suphl3
and a fair number of buyers in attet
dance, holders would not make condo
sions, and all grades of cattle sold full,
up to last weeks prices. •
Prime to extra fat steers may be quote
at 7%@7)6(G7%, and a fancy drove o
two, if there mid have been anysuch or
sale, would probably have brought
cents. It was remarked to day •tha
commonish cattle sold more readil
than last week, and in some cases,
ratter better prices.
New Yorkers, as has -been the cas
for some time past, are taking most o
the cattle, here, Philadelphians, it is al
leged, being able to buy to better advan
cage in Baltimore. heretofore,Phils
delphia, has usually drawn pretty neat
ily for supplies, particularly at this sea
son of the year, but New York opera
tors, owing to some cause or, other, apt
pear to be able to give better prices, ant•
as a consequence, they get the cattle.
