A good deal has been said within . the
last month in regard to the intention of
refiners suspending operations for want
Of a margin, but as the shipments held
u p pretty well, it was received by many
with considerable allowance. The ship
ments during the week which has jolt
closed furnish proof sufficient to sat
isfy the most incredulous that there is
something in it, 6,695 bbls against 11,159
last week, and over 1,3000 bbls the week
preceding that. We find by reference
to the file of the GAZETTE of 1868, that
the shipments during the week ending .
Sept. 12, of that year, were 17,120 bbls,
and the week preceding, 15,699; from
this it will be seen that the shipments
this week are but little over one third
of what they were , last year. , As we
have already Intimated, our manufac
turere "shut down" for the:very good
reason that they could make nothing by
running, and it was hoped, and hopes
are still entertained, that a movement of
this kind would place the market-- in a
healthy condition, that is force reined
-up or crude down, it, matters not which,
so that a fair manufacturer's protitoould
be secured. Thus far, it must be con
fessed, the movement has not been a
success, as crude appears to be fully as
strong as it was during the" earlier part
of the.week, and this, tco, right in the
face of a largely increased production;
while refined, notwithstanding the sus
pension of the most of the largest con
cerns and largely decreased shipments,
is dull and, if auytlaing„ weak, and
prices are a fraction lower than during
the early part of the week. As we have
already stated, however, hopes are still
entertained that there will be a reaction,
and many argue that it is a matter of
necessity, that the actual oil is now
wanted, and not • paper contracts,
and that with reduced ' stocks and
very light shipments, prices must
rule higher. ,There is this, however, and
it should not be lost_sight of, the trade
at large is not so much interestedm an
advance or a decline, in the one or the
other, as. it is in getting prices
equalized, an as to • "afford a mar
gin to both manufacturer' and dealer,
and the sooner this can •ba realized,
the better for ail concerned.
