The excitement in the gold market
continues. The opening price of Satur
day was 137%, from which, - andel vari
ous rumors from Washington, the mar
ket declined to 135 g, and after 4 o'clock,
r. rat. advanced again to 137 g,. The
coarse of market next week will de
pend on the doings of the Treasury De;
partment, since the cliques have it all
in their power to put up the price if they
see fit, having now the full control of all
the gold held by banks and in the open
market. The short interest in the mar
ket is enormous, and importers are hold
ing off to buy exchange or gold . at pres
ent prices. The consequence is that ex
change, which is offered at 8% for 60
day bills, cannot be placed at all, and
although a net profit of 2 per cent re
mains on bonds shipped to Europe, yet
the impossibility- of selling exchange
must soon stop shipping bonds, or gold
must yield so importers will buy.
Government bonds are reported daily
as more appreciating in value, and ad
vancing, yet the flucuations for new
bonds remain between 120% to 12IN.
The number of sellers for bonds is daily
increasing, and _should gold decline,
anything what Is expected, a heavy de
cline in bonds must follow. If the Gov
ernment is actually moving in the di
rection toward specie payments, gold
should decline and bonds Would follow
without depreciating their value.
Stocks are steadily declining, with the
exception of a few clique stocks. The,
market suffers under the apprehension
of a tight money market :at Ilia end of
this month.
At present money is easy yet in our
local market, the demand being limited.

The mpst important feature in com
mercial circles this week, Is the sudden
and unexpected advance in wheat and
flour, botti in New York and ' Chicago,
under the influence of the foreign news.
There is little or no. change in either
flour or grain in this market, however,
which may be accounted foi in the fact
that dealers here do not go off half
cocked, as they do in Chicago, and as a
coniequence there is less fluctuation in
prices here than there. There is scarcely
anything coming from Chicago to this
market, excepting whisky; for several
years past Pittsburgh has drawu t heavilV
on that place for flour, but riow our
dealers have been obliged to buy nearer
home, and this they are doing to's much
better advantage than` they could in
Chicago.
