Who :Invented The sewing machine
The Elentroiaiy &acing
Machias Ifechanisla and ,*tsing Machine
Stitches, with a glance at the:history of the
Sewing Haskins, is the title of a neat and
instructive pimphletror- manual which
is just offered to the 'public by Mr. J. ,
Battey, of New York." The bistory of this
very important invention has never be
fore been given so much in detail, nor
have we ever before seen so minute and
satisfactory an account of the mechanical
principles upon which it operates, Xr.
Battey assigns the honor of inventing the
first sewing machine to Rev. John
Adams Dodge, of Monkton - ,YL, who, as
early as the year 1818, invented, and with
the assistance of John Knowles, au in
genious mechanic or the same town,
constructed an instruatent which made
the "back.stitch," and sewed a perfect
seam.. "No effort was. made,". he ma,
"however, to intkoduce it to the public."
The journeymen tailors, alarmled and of
fended, denounced the "sewing machine"
as an invasion on their rights; the public
had not then learned to have much con
fidence in labor-saving machinery of any
kind; the rude state of the mechanic arts
at that period'was against him; and Mr.
Dodge, having the pastoral charge of
two,
and sometimes threachurches, found
thathe must abandon eiffter his invention
or the care of his flock. ,In view of all
these difficulties he decided to giva.up the
machine; and thus terminated the' first
effort of-inventive gentus to relieve the
overburdened wife and mother from the
"drudgery of the needle:"
The Big Trees of California.
The groves of giant trees_in California
are worth a journey to :see. , There are
three of these, the most noted being the
Calaveras grove, in the. cone ty of that
name. It is reached by way of Stockton,
from where a stage ride of sixty-one miles
takes one to "Murphy's." From this
place to the trees is a distance of eleven
miles. Part of the road is over hot plains
and footAills, and part by a clear stream
through shady • woods of pine and oak. :
At the grove is a :good hotel which ,
caarges $3 per day. The trees are of
mammoth size and are great curiosities.
In height they are • front 150 to 827
feet, diameter ten to thirty feet, and
there are ninety-two of them. Some
ideal of their size may be - had trona
a comparison „of them with Trinity
Church steeple, above which, the .tallest
tree would tower full sixty feet. Their
age is supposed to be from 1,200 to 2,500
years. The'cost of ktrip to this grove
from San Francisco and return is about
$35 in gold. There is anether grove
miles from Mariposa on the ToSenilte
route, which is Considered as attractive
as the one in Calaveras County. It con.
tanis 427 trees, the largest being thirty
four feet in diameter. ..By branching off
for a day, the tourist can see these trees
on his way to the valley. A. Smaller
grove of twenty-four trees, the largest of
which is thirty six feet in.diameter, is to
be seen on Hardin'ta route;,, It is called
the Tuolumne grove. • ' ,

- A letter writer says that Saratoga has
its uses,
though many pecpie come and
go and do not discoverthem. Its good
uses are to drink the ever-abounding and
health-giving waters, and to study hu
man nature from a.charitable standpoint.
Its base uses are a too prominent dazzle
and dissipation, atveary 'round of lieart
less show, a fierce - rivalry Of dress and'
display, a succession of headaches and'
heartaches, and a finale of disgust and
depletion--7to be epitomized . when the
trunks are unpacked at bon:teats 'four sea

uncomfortable economy in weightier
matters. The glare and - glitter 'of fash

appetite; and you can pick from the
throng certain people plethoric of purse
and of flesh, who come ostensibly-for the
benefit the waters confer, but really to ,be
dazed with the dazzle of lavish expen
diture and the abandon that :reigns
in the parlors,•, in the ball-rooms
and in the streets. Some people here
take much comfort; but they, are "domi."
