Under the manipulations of the cliques
gold was put down to 133 1 / 4 , and sold up
at the close to 135% to 135%, under great
excitement. It seems to be the determi
nation of the holders of gold to put up
the price so high that the shorts will be
compelled to cover and pay their own
price for it; but if, thepublic does not
get excited'and keep aloof, it is - more
than likely that a break in the market
will take place that will astonish even
those who have all along had confidence
in lower quotations. •
Government bonds opened weak, and
soon after declined about % per cent,
recovering, however, at the close about
IA, per cent. on , higher gold quotations.
Besides the Government, there seems
to be no buyers In the market, but there
are plenty of sellers,' as is shown by the
amount of bonds offered yesterday to
the Government, 16,800,000, when only
two mlllllOO were wanted.
Stocks are dull, and with the excep
tion of New York and Cleveland and
Pittabiiih, in which dealings were very
excited. The, _market is without any
