EF;VIENV FOR VIE WEEK.
The oil market has been very semi
tive throughout. the week, and while
there has:been no , essential change in
prices, there has' been a larger volume
.
of bu siness ii the aggregate, and at the
close the f el l zis rather stronger than
..
it was at the opening of Abe.. week. If
the advices today are correct, Antiverp
has touched the highest-'.paint, it has
reached hay some time; though, Estrange
salt may seem, the advance there, as yet,'
hari had no influence h except, per
. ere,
hapri, to create a stran ge feeling, as price . , s
'
are no better. toolay. than thby - were
.
yesterday. The ,policy 'of “New -York'
seems•to be to' keep prices down, and in
order to'scissm Plish this purpose opera
tore there are selling short at remarks ;
,bIY low figures; thus far they have been
successful In carrying out their pro
gramttle, but how long it will continue
so„ time along will develop: ' r .
Much Ina been said during the past
week in regardt6reliners closing their
works until such time as .a margin
could be secured, Nit, as noted in our
laist report, there is not that unanimity
in regard to the matter as it was sup
posed, there would be when it . was
first , broached, A movement 'of this
kind, in order to insure success, should
be general, and this it is found impossible
to attain at present. Some of our refiners,
it seems, have sold ahead for several
months and have the crude bought to
make it , ' and consequently tliey are not
inclined to close - up with their business
an this unfinished condition. • Others,
•-•.- again, are hopeful that the market will,
of itself, assume a better shape by-and
by, and when an improvement does
take place, they want to be in_condition
to take advantage of it. We are as.
sand, however, that a number of the
most prominent establishments have al
ready snspended, both here and at
' Cleveland, and that others contemplate;
within a few days, pursuing a aimilar
tour se.

NEWS
" The river rose a few inches yesterday
under the influence of the recent show
ers, but the rise does not, nor is it likely
to amount to. anything. The weather,
yesterday, was cloudy and clear at short
intervals, though cooler than it was on
Saturday.
—Business is now enirely suspended
at the landing, and is likely to continue
so for some time. There are many who
believe that as during the Spring and
Summer tire was an nnnsal 'amount of
rain, that the Fall will be characterized
by drought. . •
—Capt. Tom. Pot its running the Nick
Wall, between St. - Louis and Lexington.
—Captain H. L. Lee has declined to
name his new Red River packet. the
Gladiolajnstead of RFlght Star, as was
originally intended.
—Dan. Rice has PUrchased the steamer
WilL S. Hays for $12,000. The steamer
will be I used totransport his circus
down the Misitissippi and np the Ohio.
—The Charleston passed by. Louisville
the other day, en •route, it is said, for
Pittabnigh. It is not likely, however,
that she will reach here until there is a
rise.
—A number of planters in Arkansas,
in conjunction with a few Memphis mer
chants, are about to organize a new pack
et line for the Arkansas trade, making
semi-weekly 4 trips. The arrangements
are nearly perfected.
—A dispatch from Benton announces
the safe arrival at that place of the passen
gers by the Admiral Farragut—num
baring 75 in all. They made the trip
overland from Cow Island, escaping the
surveillance of the numerous Indians
who have been on the wsr path near
and along the Missouri.
—A Louisville telegram says: The
'pilots of the Strader report 4 feet'of
water over gortland and all the bare in
the Lower Ohlo. They. also report the
Camelia, Ann and Minneola over Flint
Island, but the Mary Davae is aground
there with a barge of ore, and the Quick
step aground at
for e Shawnetown Bar. The
Strader will lay up the present at
Shippingsport.
—There wilt be a meeting of pilots and
engineers of this city some time next
week, we understand, to take measures
to reduce the amount of license now paid
($lO annually) to the original sum--$lO
for first issue of license and $1 for each
annual renewal. Already the pilots and
engineers of St. Louis .have taken the
warded a r steps in the maer, and have for
petition he r e for signatures,
and nearly every pilot and engineer in
the city has signed it. This petition
after receiving all the signatures to be
obtained in Pittsburgh, Louisville and
other places, goes to Congress next
session.
—On Sunday, the Bth, an oz train,
laden with the dirt's freight, from
Tabor Island, bound to Benton, was
attacked by Indians, said to number one
hundred and fifty. Fortunately the
teamsters were well armed with breech
loaders, and shot-guns, which they at
once let loose, and the Indians beat a
hasty retreat. But no sooner were they
out of range than they commenced cir
cling round the train and built up breast
works of
fine,, a n d
behind which they
opened fire, and in a short time had
killed and wounded nearly all' the cat
tle, and riddled the wagons. Captain
Frank Iledert, commander of the Flirt,
acted with the teaa•sters. The party of
whites was rescued" by the timely ar
rival of another train, and Frank's ele
gant scalp is still in the right place.—St.
