FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, August 21, 1869. t ,
The downward speculation in gold
reached 13134 at noon on Saturday, from
which it recovered to 131. 7 4 to 132,
The downward course of the premium
is assisted , by the large offers - of influen
tial parties who, having bought gold at
high prices and being unable to effect
an advance, now do all in their power
to depress the premium as much as
possible in order to buy for a rise, since
the time is favorable for that, should the
Government not sell largely. . The
amount of floating gold in the market
is much reduced and for the two months
of September and October 11 will cost
little or noting to carry large gold tal
ances without extra charges of interest,
and should speculative sales remain un
covered, gold would command interest
for loaning. For . this and other reasons,
concerning crop reports from. England,
a rise of several points in the next few
days is more than probable '
The depression in the gold premium
has influenced a downward movement
in Government bonds, and capitalists,
seeing how little it takes to cause a re
action in - the high priced currency
value of our bonds, are holding back
with investments for the present. Even
if the policy of the Administration is to
improve our depreciated currency by
placing the currency market price of
our securities on a par with gold, the
past week has freely demonstrated that
that objective point can be reached at a
much lower point of the market value of
bonds by_reducing the gold premium at
a favorable moment, and by publishing
the amount of bonds to be purchased
from week to week. If this policy
had been pursued since July first, the
government would have saved from 5
to 7 per cent. on the entire purchase of
bonds, now amounting to 3.5 millions.
The movement west and south, which is
now beginning, will, most likely, cause
a stringent money market during Sep
tember and October, and a retrograde
movement in bonds is almost a foregone
conclusion.
Stocks are dull and heavy. New
York stocks are taking the lead and the
Western roads, for which a rising ten
dency was manifested a fortnight ago,
follow in the same direction. The con
solidation of several t oads so far have
not benefltted speculators as much as the
Neti York and Fort Wayne roads. The
game is:Understood, and too many have
ing bein attracted it does not. pay ;
any more for the originators. -
In oue-local stock and bond markets
matters 'look dull and -devoid of in
tared. A few thousand bonds of any
description will supply all the demand,
and croakers care little to carry bonds
ate moment when discounting will pay
better.
Money commands from 8 to 10 per
cent. for prime paper.
